Simeone's side take a two-goal lead into the second leg, and they were decent value for it. This wasn't a vintage Atletico Madrid performance, but they certainly did enough to claim the win. They can start looking forward to an appearance in the competition's quarter-finals. They have one foot in the final four with this result.

FULL TIME: Las Palmas 0-2 Atletico Madrid.

This has been a positive performance by Koke. The midfielder has come in for criticism in recent weeks, but he has been the driving force behind this Atletico Madrid display.

Moya was required to make the save from Gomez. The Atletico Madrid goalkeeper has been kept busier in the second half, that much must be said. But the visitors have never really been under threat.

Indeed, Garcia and Boateng have both entered the book for talking back to the referee. Tensions are rising among the Las Palmas players.

Las Palmas are strong at home and so this will go down as a good result for Atletico Madrid. The Gran Canarians aren't used to losing in this stadium. They have a good record.

As I have said before, though, when Las Palmas press that leaves space in behind for the likes of Griezmann to exploit. That is the risk they are taking. Will it pay off or cost them?

Can Las Palmas find a goal to at least give them something to build on in the second leg? They have riden their luck at times, but they are pressing Atletico Madrid now.

This is turning into a rather fiesty affair. There are some crunching tackles going in. This time Griezmann has a litle kick out at a couple of Las Palmas scrapping for the ball on the ground.

That should have been the third goal. Griezmann was played in behind, but his initial shot was saved at the near post. Then Gaitan can't squeeze in the rebound under pressure.

And here comes the final change for Atletico Madrid. Off comes captain Gabi Fernandez and on comes Nico Gaitan in his place.

Having said that, the changes Las Palmas have just made don't hint at a team who believe they are still in this tie. They are wrapping up their best players in cotton wool.

The home side are making a go of this. Of course, a goal, even if they end up losing, could be crucial as they head into the second leg. They could still claw this back at the Calderon.

That's a booking for Vrsaljko with 15 minutes left to play. The right back accepts the decision as he enters the book.

This has become quite an open game in the last five minutes or so. Las Palmas are showing more in the way of attacking intent. Atletico still have some defending to do.

It looks like Gimenez will be playing as a central midfielder, which is an unusual role for him but it's not the first time that he has been played there. Simeone has tried this before.
