Always an explosive clash on and off the field, the ultras agreed a pre-match truce and to approach the Stadio Olimpico from different sides, while not bringing weapons or knives. Sad to hear reports yesterday, then, that some of the Lazio squad had received threatening phone calls from Roma ultras.

Lazio coach Vladimir Petkovic: "I am very proud to be leading these players who have given it their all. They have all sacrificed a lot and achieved great results in Italy and in Europe. They deserve to win tomorrow. There is a triple objective here: to qualify for Europe, a heated derby and then there is a cup that is worth a lot. The important thing is not to think about all this but to give it our all. With positivity we can achieve our goal."

Roma caretaker boss Aurelio Andreazzoli: "This is different to the other derbies, as it is valid for silverware, for Europa League qualification and for local pride. Which is more important? It doesn’t matter, this is all or nothing."

Perhaps an indication of how far these two clubs have fallen is that this match represents their only chance of reaching the Europa League next season. Roma can become the first club in Italian history to win the Coppa Italia 10 times. Should they beat their bitter rivals, they will have a permanent silver star placed on their jerseys.

Both sides are at virtually full-strength for what is one of the most significant Rome derbies in history. Maarten Stekelenburg is Roma’s only absentee due to injury, with the Romanian Bogdan Lobont starting in goal. Mattia Destro heads the Roma attack, with Francesco Totti, Erik Lamela and Marquinhos providing support. Lazio, who are without the injured Louis Saha, field Miroslav Klose as their lone frontman, with Hernanes and Antonio Candreva charged with providing the creativity behind him.
