Oh, spare us the countdown, will you? Right on choreographed cue, Ukraine kick off, playing from right to left as we see it.

And out come the teams! England led by Steven Gerrard, Ukraine by Anatoliy Symoshchuk in the absence of Andriy Shevchenko.

A load of dancing miners have just done the pre-game show on a pitch that the teams weren't allowed to train on yesterday. Ho hum...

I'm thinking England will scrape a draw, then we will spend four days convincing ourselves we have it in us to upset Spain - followed by an almighty reality check.

A prediction from Zac Micallef (@zac_mic) - "2-1 to England, Carroll to come on and score a header. They will be 1-0 down at half time."

More from Tom in Donetsk: "Ukraine fans are getting a Mexican wave going in a one-third-empty stadium, Hardly 'Welcome to hell' at the moment."

England have won three and lost one of their four previous meetings with Ukraine, though Ukraine did win the last game 1-0 in World Cup 2010 qualifying.

And Tom Adams reports: "Ukraine keeper Andriy Pyatov just went racing past us here and into the tunnel while the other two keepers remain warming up. Hmm."

Andriy Shevchenko has come out to warm up fully 15 minutes after his team-mates. Suggests he may not even be fit enough to appear off the bench. We'll see...

Here's Roy Hodgson's pre-match assessment: "It's not just England who haven't always performed when the expectations were heightened. There's quite a few teams that have failed. It's a fact of life. We've come here with the England national team. We believe in ourselves and we want to do well. In some ways it's rather nice that people back home are hoping and even believing we can do well, and we're giving them something to dream about and cling onto."

A note on yellow cards - it has been put about that they are wiped at the end of the group stage. Not so - only after the quarter-finals are any remaining bookings discarded. Says UEFA Article 21.04: "Single cautions from matches in the final tournament expire on completion of the quarter-finals, and are not carried forward to the semi-finals."
