Hungary coming forwards now with Sallai... he's outnumbered, but Schafer assists him on the overlap, but nothing doing - goal kick.

60'

An hour gone. Still goaless here.

58'

Szalai and Dias is a great physical tussle as both mouth each other off in the lead up to a long Hungary throw.

56'

Schafer... Semedo's challenge, falls for Sallai! Held by Patricio.

53'

Fernandes fouled after a flicked the ball away from Attila Szalai.

Off we go again.

  • End of 1st Half
45'

There's halfway. Still 0-0, we'll be back in 15.

One minute of added time.

42'

Guerreiro, thought he was fouled... Fernandes' cross... Ronaldo! Has to score, but it's over! Huge chance. 0-0, still.

40'

Ruben Dias booked for a challenge the referee deems too strong.

36'

In towards Szalai, who flicks the header goalbound! Patricio holds.

35'

Szalai fouled in the left half-space in the attacking half. Free kick, first proper chance for Hungary to put the ball in the Portugal box.

34'

Lovrenciszces is unlucky to not win a corner off Jota as he scampers after a long ball into the channel.

32'

Hungary just can't get out at the moment, every forward passing option they have is cut off; they're forced to simply go back to Gulasci and then go long towards Szalai.

30'

Floated inswinger from Silva, into Ronaldo, who flicks the header well wide.

29'

Cleared, and Hungary win the throw.

29'

Semedo's deflected cross wins the corner on the right hand side. Fernandes over it.

28'

A fizzed cross from Silva off the right goes begging; too far ahead of Jota and Ronaldo.

26'

Ronaldo, it opens up for him in the middle... he shimmies... can't find Fernandes, but it ricochets... and he slides in Silva, who goes down! No penalty, Portuguese pressure continues.

24'

Beautiful dummy turn from Jota to spin away from his marker, and he's unlucky not to win a corner from the resulting tussle.

23'

Delivered by Fernandes, towards Ronaldo, but cleared well.

23'

Corner, Portugal. Won by Carvalho off Fiola.

16'

Semedo and Fiola go down after an aerial challenge, and the incident is resolved with a drop ball.

14'

Jota fouled by Nagy.

11'

Patient possession play from Portugal here so far. Hungary are doing what we expected; it's the low block of five, sometimes a midfield four than a three, with one of the strikers covering a wide area to add numbers.

9'

In from Fernandes, Jota is free at the near post! He pokes it way wide of the target.

8'

Portgual free kick wide right again.

7'

Danilo concedes a free kick just inside his own defensive half.

6'

Free kick wide right for Portugal. Fernandes and Silva over it, in towards Pepe from the United man, but he fouls his man at the back post.

4'

You can feel the Hungarian adrenaline, fuelled by the capacity crowd. I say that, and Jota makes a long ball from Semedo stick, and turns well, hitting it with the left! Saved by Gulasci!

2'

Ronaldo's first touch is one of his trademark chops. Incredible.

2'

Early foul on Pepe by Schafer.

Off we go.

16:56

A capacity crowd in Budapest. You love to see it.

16:54

The players are out.

16:50

10 minutes to kick off.

16:45

15 to go.

16:41
16:30

Half an hour to kick off.

16:23

The three men in the middle of midfield for the home side are all sub-six foot terriers - tough-tacklers - who won't give up without a fight. It seems no surprise that the muscle and height of Danilo Pereira and Carvalho, both six foot two, has been relied upon here.

16:22

For Hungary, their primary out-ball will be into the chest of Adam Szalai, who will most likely pull away from Dias' attentions and look to exploit Pepe instead. Should the target man rattle the Porto veteran early, Hungary could have a real chance of either getting the former Real Madrid man sent off, or better, nicking a goal at a set-play.

16:19

A key battle will be Adam Nagy against Bruno Fernandes, and how the Bristol City midfielder is able to man-mark the Manchester United talisman out of the game. It can be done - examples like the Europa League final spring to mind - and if the space between the defensive lines is closed quickly enough, you'll find Fernandes drops deeper and deeper to get a touch of the ball. This, therefore, is beneficial for the defending side as the further Fernandes is away from the penalty area and the goal, the less dangerous he is. The problem with that, though, is the fact that even if you are able to mark the Portugal number 11 out, you still have to contend with Silva, Jota, and most prominently, Ronaldo.

16:16

For Portugal, the gameplan will be all about breaking down the low Hungarian block, and that is exactly why Jota and Silva play out wide, with both looking to come inside and exploit the narrow areas in the channels and the half-spaces; either looking for a one-two, through ball, or shooting opportunity. Carvalho and Pereira won't stray too far away from their centre-backs, in turn forming that box we're so used to seeing with many sides, for central defensive solidity against the counter attack. In this way, it allows the full-backs to bomb forwards: something Guerreiro and Semedo excel at anyway, so expect them to maintain the Portguese's width with the two wide forwards coming inside to support Ronaldo and Fernandes.

16:16

With just under 45 minutes to kick off, let's discuss the main tactical talking points...

16:12
16:11
16:10

16:07

The hosts, meanwhile, will set their stall out for pure survival. Five at the back, held together by experienced Leipzig centre-half Willi Orban and his club-mate Peter Gulasci, the Hungarians know how much pressure they'll be under here. Workhorse midfielders Andras Schafer and Laszlo Kleinheisler flank Adam Nagy in the engine room to add bite and energy when pressing the tight spaces, with target man Adam Szalai partnered up top by Roland Sallai, who will work hard in the shape off the ball, and run the channels and look to play off and around his strike partner in the rare occasion Hungary have possession.

16:04

Portugal come into this tournament as holders and second favourites behind their fellow Group F challengers and previously defeated finalists France. They line up here in a 4-2-3-1, with Nelson Semedo replacing the absent Joao Cancelo at right-back due to a positive Covid test. Pepe and Ruben Dias shield Rui Patricio, flanked by Raphael Guerreiro on the left, with the Dortmund man dangerous on the overlap. The double pivot of William Carvalho and Danilo Pereira will sit and protect the centre-backs, with Bruno Fernandes given a free role behind talismanic skipper Cristiano Ronaldo. On the flanks, inside forward Diogo Jota is on the left, with inverted winger Bernardo Silva to the right, looking to cut inside onto his favoured left boot and deliver a cross for either Ronaldo at the front post, Jota at the far, or Fernandes on the edge of the box.

16:04

Let's dissect these teams, shall we?

16:03

And here are the Portuguese:

16:02

Hungary are in a 5-3-2: Gulasci, Lovrencsics, Botka, Orban, Szalai, Fiola, Kleinheisler, Nagy, Schafer, Sallai, Szalai.
