GOOOAAALLL!!! Jonathan Walters buries the spot-kick in the bottom corner and it's 1-1 in the blink of an eye!

Ireland have been given a penalty straight from the restart. Shane Long is caught in the face by a high boot and - after initial confusion - the referee points to the spot. It is a very dangerous foul, but marginally outside the box.

That all came from chaos in the Irish defence. Darren Randolph made a save at point-blank range to save his side, but from the resulting corner nobody picked up Grzegorz Krychowiak and he made Ireland pay.

GOOOAAALLL!!! Grzegorz Krychowiak controls an Ireland clearance with his first touch and drills a low shot into the bottom corner with his second. 1-0 Poland.

There's a familiar face in the Poland goal this evening. Lukasz Fabianski has played against many of the Ireland players before during his time with Arsenal and current club Swansea City. The keeper's yet to be really tested and comes out with authority to claim a lofted free-kick with ease.

The presence of Seamus Coleman at right-back is a big boost for Ireland tonight. The Everton defender has been out for the best part of a month and wasn't expected to be fit in time to start this game.

The visitors have barely seen the ball in the opening minutes. Neither side has looked like creating anything of note, but Poland are bossing the midfield and dictating the pace of the game.

James McClean is a little over-eager chasing down a ball over the top and is fortunate to escape a booking. Ireland's physicality high up the pitch will be the way that they try and stifle the supply to Lewandowski tonight... but it will need to be done more cleverly than that.

This is the biggest game of O'Neill's tenure, but that hasn't forced him into an overly attacking tactical change. Ireland, as they usually do, will look to play mainly on the break.

The hosts have dominated in the early stages, with every touch of the ball by an Irish player whistled by the fans. It's a hostile atmosphere and Martin O'Neill will want his team to take the sting out of the occasion as quickly as possible.

Poland get the game underway, kitted out in their usual white shirts with red shorts. Ireland are in their familiar green and white.

The permutations are pretty straightforward this evening. An Ireland victory would see them qualify automatically for the European Championships. A defeat would leave them facing a play-off, as would a draw (assuming Germany avoid defeat at home against Georgia).

It doesn’t take a genius to work out that stopping Robert Lewandowski is vital if Ireland are to have any chance this evening. The Bayern Munich striker is the form player in Europe right now and just can’t stop scoring.
