22:27

So there we are. After a long and sapping campaign, Ireland leave with a bit fat nowt. But they played well tonight, and though it'll be difficult, they have positives to take. Night.

22:27

Slovakia 4-2 Ireland

Doherty lashes against the bar and Ireland are out! Slovakia win 4-2 on penalties!

22:26

Slovakia 4-2 Ireland

Gregus panenkas but Randolph waits, and almost gets a hand to it, but does not.

22:25

Slovakia 3-2 Ireland

Browne takes the archetypal bad penalty, telegraphed and saveable height; rodak saves without too much difficulty.

22:24

Slovakia 3-2 Ireland

Eesh! RNdolph goes the right way again, but Haraslin hits it just hard enough to beat his hand.

22:24

Slovakia 2-2 Ireland

Brady opens his body and passes confidently into the bottom left as Rodak dives the other way.

22:23

Slovakia 2-1 Ireland

Hrosovsky sidefoots high into the roof. Brilliant!

22:22

Slovakia 1-1 Ireland

Hourihane goes down the middle as Rodak dives left. That was close to his feet.

22:21

Slovakia 1-0 Ireland

Randolph guess right but Hamsik finds the side-netting, to the keeper's right. Great penalty.

22:20

Hamsik will take the first penalty...

22:20

Ireland played well tonight, and had the better of the chances, certainly in extra-time. They grew in confidence, and tried to play football until the end.

22:19

Misery is imminent. Mmmmm misery.

22:16

Penalties it is, likewise in Scotland-Israel and Bosnia-Herzegovina-Northern Ireland

22:16

Full-time: Slovakia 0-0 Ireland

120+1'

Stephen Kenny appears to have been booked for mouth.

120'

There'll be two additional minutes.

119'

I remember Charlie Brooker once writing that he doesn't like sport, which sort of surprised him because he finds all human misery amusing. We're close to a glorious taste of exactly that.

117'

I've enjoyed this, words I find it extremely odd to type because I did not anticipate that at all.

116'

He goes over the wall seeking the area just inside the near post, but can only ruffle the side-netting. I know we all like to see great goals, but maybe that ball needed to go into the box.

116'

Brady looks likely...

115'

O'Dowda drives towards the box, so Hamsik yanks him down as you would. He's booked, and Ireland have a free-kick 25 yards out, just left of centre....

113'

Christie is ready to come on, but Doherty decides he can carry on. I can hear Mourinho cackling with joy from here.

113'

Doherty goes down with cramp.

112'

Long replaces McGoldrick.

111'

Gyomber replaces Vavro; maybe he's good at penalties.

108'

Mick's done his homework - good man - so can tell us that Bozenik is much quicker than Duda, a threat in behind and general good player. That being the case, I'm surprised he didn't get on sooner.

107'

Slovakia bring Bozenik on for Duda.

106'

Right then, let's have it.

21:57

Half-time in extra-time: Slovakia 0-0 Ireland

105'

Browne has done really well since coming on.

104'

Hourihane finds Stevens who slides down the left, where Bradh and O'Dowda exchange passes - that's lovely! - the latter crossing to the front post where Browne spins into a brilliant flick ... which hits the base of the post!

103'

This has slowed now. I think both sides would rather take their chances with penalties than risk giving away a goal on the counter.

101'

Duda has three hacks at Browne and when he eventually connects, he's booked.

101'

Hard to argue with this.

99'

Change for Ireland, O'Dowda, who's been injured and not played for Bristol City so far this season, replacing Robinson.

98'

Not sure I'd trust these to score many penalties, but Randolph strikes me as a keeper who might save one or two.

96'

Nice finish, but "sensational" is strong. I like Ings though, who has a great touch and knows where to find a goal.

96'

This has been a much less awful game than you'd think, looking at the teams, the stakes, the absence of crowd and the score.

94'

Duda shots from distance and Hendrick blocks, but it kicks up and over to Haraslin, who's been good since coming on. Left side of the box, he has to strike across the ball, which skews just over the bar.

92'

Brady's corner drops to Browne, who shoots ... but Vavro blocks!

91'

Lovely from Ireland, Browne and Brady combining to find McGoldrick just outside the box, who explodes into a swivel and drives a riser that Rodak tips over!

91'

Off we go again.

21:37

Extra-time it is, two brilliant goalline clearances taking us there; but where Haraslin did more or less all he could, Hourihane was proper ye've gottae score territory.

21:37

Full-time: Slovakia 0-0 Ireland

90+1'

Hendrick finds Browne, who curls in a cross and McGoldrick collapses, but the ref is having none of him.

90'

There'll be three added minutes.

89'

In all the excitement, I forgot to note that just after the goalline clearance, Kucka went off and Gregus came on.

87'

I thought this was nailed on for 0-0, but both teams have had serious chances.

85'

Aaaaarrrrggggghhhh! What a let-off for Slovakia! Duffy finds McGoldrick who weaves beautifully and finds Robinson inside the box; he twists away from Rodak and finds Brady, who squares for Hourihane ... AND HE'S IN FRONT OF GOAL! YE'VE GOTTAE SCORE! But it's on his right foot, so instead of lamping it he just goes for a solid connection, allowing Kucka to kick off the line! What a chance that was!

83'

Mazan comes down the left and crosses, but Egan heads clear under no pressure.

82'

Egan fouls Duda and Slovakia just get it going again, Rusnak driving towards goal, but eventually Haraslin's cross is headed clear by Duffy.

81'

Incidentally, Danny Ings has scored an overhead kick to put England 3-0 up.

81'
80'

Ireland are knocking it about nicely now, keeping it before Hourihane finds Robinson, whose pass between the centre-backs for McGoldrick is only just intercepted.

77'

This has been much better these last 15 minutes or so.

75'

Aaarrrgggh! A brilliant pass from Hamsik finds Haraslin on the left of the box, and he cuts inside Doherty and might shoot, but opts to go another stride and drills a low one past Randolph ... but Duffy is on the line to stretch out a go-go gadget leg! Brilliant defending! But the ball's headed into Randolph's midriff ... but doesn't rebound with sufficient velocity to take it into the net.

74'

Haraslin replaces Mihalik.

73'

Doherty, who's coming onto a good game, bundles himself into the box but is eventually crowded out.

72'

This is a better period for Ireland.

71'

The corner comes to nowt, Duffy climbing all over his marker.

70'

Doherty nicks possession really smartly to set Ireland away, and Stevens, raiding down the left, sticks a cross over to Browne, on the far side. He's falling as he shoots but it's still a good chance and he still gets a decent lace on it ... but slicing across so the ball goes towards the bear post, where Rodak is able to turn behind.

70'

I believe Coady has put England 2-0 up.

69'

Duffy leaps to clear with his studs, right about Duda's swede. He's booked for a dangerous tackle.

68'

But here comes Doherty, raiding down the right and finding Brady, who swings over a cross which is cleared.

66'

I know I was talking about whether Ireland should gamble not that long ago, but now I'm wondering if they should just play for penalties, because Slovakia's midfield class is telling.

65'

Brady is playing down the right, with Robinson swtiching to the left, where McClean was previously.

64'

Hamsik and Duda are the best players on this pitch by far.

62'

Slovakia attack down the right with Hamsik fidingDuda, who crosses to the far side of the box ... when Rusnak wellies over and them some.

61'

Browne, of whom McCarthy is much enamoured, replaces McCarthy, and Brady replaces McClean.

60'

Slovakia have been much the better team this half.

58'

McCarthy pulls up with what looks like a hamstring. That'd be bad news for Ireland, because Kelly should be wondering when to do something brave, not fretting over a forced substitution.

57'

"I always say, 'If you get a corner can you get another one? Can you keep em under?' says Mick McCarthy as Slovakia do just that. Nothing happens.

54'

The corner comes to nowt.

53'

Nice from Slovakia, moving the ball from right to left with Rusnak haring into space. His cut-back is seeking Duda, but Duffy is there to concede a corner.

51'

The corner comes over and Rodak comes, punching a bit of the ball and a bit of Duffy; the free-kick is given in his favour, but the challenge looked fine to me.

50'

Eesh! Ireland win a free-kick out on the left and Hourihane curls in a brute, which bounces, and with no one wanting to chance a clearance, it bumps Hamsik and bobbles just wide.

47'

McClean launches himself into a challenge with Hamsik, from behind but winning the ball; he's booked, and it's probably fair in that the laws were accurately applied. It's tricky as though he got the ball, on another day he might've injured someone, but on the other hand, tackling is good.

47'

Ah. Kelly's pre-match interview was a bit odd - this sheds some light on that.

46'

Off we go again.

20:34

If ever a match looked a cert for penalties, this is it.

20:34

Half-time: Slovakia 0-0 Ireland

45+1'

The corner goes short and when the ball's swung in it arrives by Duda ... who hooks an acrobatic effort over his shoulder that skips just wide!

45'

There'll be one added minute.

45'

Slovakia break with Mihalik, sprinting down the right, and he finds Duda in the box, left-hand side, 15 yards out. He turns adroitly and opens his body to curl a fine, low effort towards the far corner ... but Randolph hurls himself left to tip it around the post! Excellent effort, excellent save.

45'

McClean moves down the left and caresses a ball into the box and into space for McGoldrick, whose cross is blocked behind; the corner comes to nothing.

44'

I swear Doherty just took a one-armed throw-in. Not often you see a foul throw in professional football, but the ref had no option but to give it.

43'

I wonder if Ireland might be better playing 4-4-2 and having Doherty and McClean stick crosses into the box. Perhaps they don't have the personnel for that tonight, but when Coleman, Connolly and Idah are fit, that might be a decent option.

41'

Kucka picks the ball up 30 yards from goal so back himself to shoot, wafting miles over the bar.

40'

Duda drops and spreads a cultured pass out for a goalkick.

37'

Doherty launches a cross into the box and Vavro collapses, allowing Hourihane to nudge back into the middle, for the waiting McClean! But he rushes his shot and pulls it; it's going wide, but Vlajent blocks it nonetheless. That was the best chance so far, if we can call it a chance.

36'

McClean finds himself on the ball in a decent positioon so tries an early cross, but it's straight at Vavro who blooters clear.

34'

This is abject stuff.

32'

Ireland press Slovakia deep inside their half and Robinson whacks over a cross - it's a a goodun - that forces Vavro into a diving header to clear.

30'

McClean catches Duda trying to play out and finds Henrdrick driving towards the box; he feeds McClean, now outside him, whose cross it bumped over the bar by McGoldrick, leaping under pressure and 15 yards out.

28'

And he picks out Valjent, who clears under no pressure.

27'

Pekarik fouls McClean, giving Hourihane a chance to bend one in...

25'

McCarthy notes that Ireland are lacking "just that bit of quality" when Stevens botches a pass. A man of rare perception.

23'

McCarthy comments that the game seems like a friendly with no crowd, and wonders if that's why the intensity is down. And it's true that this would be wild night were fans allowed in. Conor Coady was saying the other day that's it's hard to play in front of empty stands, and subs, support staff and the rest try to make more noise than their opponents in order to create some kind of atmosphere.

20'

Hourihane is late on Mihalik and is booked.

20'

Slovakia are beginning to dominate possession, with Hamsik and Duda looking dangerous as individuals and in combination.

18'
16'

This what Ireland feared! They give Hamsik time on the ball 30 yards from goal and he curves a luscious pass in behind for Mihalik, who leaves Duffy standing. But there's just enough time for Randolph to get out to him before he shoots.

15'

This is now extremely scrappy.

13'

Have a look! Robinson gets away down the right and flings over a low cross - a decent-looking one too - but Vavro is there to stick it behind.

12'

Slovakia win a free-kick down the left which Duda swerves in, but Egan is first up and heads clear easily.

11'

Mick McCarthy is doing the Ireland game; Roy Keane is doing the England game. Make of that what you will.

9'

Just to reiterate, if it's all-square after 90 minutes - and let's be real, that and 0-0 in particular look extremely possible - it's extra time then penalties.

7'

This has been a decent start from Ireland; they've had a fair bit of the ball and not conceded much decent possession.

6'

Indeed.

4'

The camera is extremely high, and the close-ups are extremely close. This game, without key players and supporters, is weird enough, and that's just adding to it.

2'

Hourihane looks for Duffy, swinging out, but his leap is smothered and Slovakia break with Duda, but just as he gets into the box he overruns the ball and Randolph clears.

1'

Pekarik slips on the ball and Robinson is onto him! But his low cut-back is blocked behind.

1'

Off we go! Winner takes all!

19:46

The players take the knee. All black lives matter.

19:42

Anthem time.

19:40

Phil Babb notes that Ireland are "Void of confidence". I sort of like that.

19:40

Anyway, here come the teams!

19:37

Gosh, this is a 7.45pm BST kick-off; and there was me thinking it was 8pm BST. Ah.

19:33

Obviously the other player to whom Ireland would have happily waved goodbye is Marek Hamsik. He's 33 now but he remains a feisty, creative and attitudinous engine. If he plays well tonight, Ireland are in trouble.

19:29
19:28

He's right, obviously, but had Ireland been able to pick two players not for their opponents to miss Skriniar and Lobotka might've been the ones for which they went.

19:25

As for Slovakia being without Skriniar and Lobotka, he says both teams have lost good players and "that's the way it goes".

19:23

Kenny says McClean has great mentality for the big occasion, but it's a "recent change". I'm not sure what that means, but he goes on to say that Idah and Connolly aren't involved at all, without explaining why - it transpires both are injured. He notes that Hourihane and McCarthy have never played together but says both are fine players and given Slovakia's fine midfield, it should be a good battle.

19:19

They may only need one to win this, so I'm by no means writing them off. But they lack the firepower to make any game anything but a struggle.

19:15

Ultimately, I look at that Ireland team and think the same thing I've thought looking at every Ireland team for about a decade: where are the goals coming from?

19:11

Kenny changes his entire front six from that dispiriting defeat to Finalnd, Molumby, Arterm, Brady, O'Dowda, Idah and Connolly all dropping out. The midfield alterations make a lot of sense, but I'd have persevered with Connolly, at least.

19:09

It's not gone especially well for Ireland lately - since Stephen Kenny took over from Mick McCarthy, Ireland drew 1-1 in Bulgaria, then lost 0-1 at home to Finland, hardly the brave new dawn that was sold.

19:08
19:06

Slovakia: Rodak; Pekarik, Vavro, Valjent, Mazan; Kucka, Hrosovsky, Hamsik; Rusnak, Duda, Mihalik. Subs: Kuciak, Greif, Gyomber, Gregus, Haraslin, Bozenik, Schranz, Pauschek, Mak, Bero, Koscelnik.

Missing for Slovakia are Milan Skriniar, who has corona, and Stanislav Lobotka, who is locked down with Napoli.

19:02

Teams!

18:59

This is an immense game. Its winners - after extra time and penalties if necessary - will meet either Bosnia & Herzegovina or Northern Ireland, and the winners of that will meet to decide which country progresses to Euro (sort of) 2020.

18:42

Evening all, and welcome to Slovakia v Ireland!
