Poland will make up Group D with France, Netherlands and Austria, pipping Wales to Euro 2024 qualification thanks to Wojicech Szczesny’s crucial shoot-out save from Daniel James. That secured the visitors a 5-4 win, the penalty competition coming at the end of extra time following a drab 0-0 draw.
Neither side created much in a frantic opening – with two years’ work at stake, both were circumspect. Ben Davies might’ve done better with a header, but otherwise the goalkeepers were largely spectators.
Wales tried to force the pace in the second half, Kieffer Moore drawing a decent save from Szczesny, but penalties had felt likely even before the game, never mind once it started, both unable to muster any kind of quality going forward. Robert Lewandowski and Jakub Kiwior both missed chances, then in extra time, Jakub Piotrowski was narrowly wide with a rasping curler.
So to penalties, the first nine of which were scored; if James missed, Wales were out. And under pressure few will ever experience, he produced a nervous effort that Szczesny could barely fail to save; Poland are going to Germany.

POOR DANIEL JAMES
He'll carry that with him for a very long time. But Wales have been on a seriously good run of qualifcation and they'll be back.

MISS! POLAND BEAT WALES 5-4 ON PENALTIES! THEY GO TO EURO 2024!
This is a weak effort, low and close to the keeper, who doesn't miss the chance to make himself the hero. Poland are going to Germany!
22:29
GOAL! POLAND 5-4 WALES (PIATEK)
Piatek sweeps home, and Dan Jmaes has to score... Goodness me....
22:28
GOAL! POLAND 4-4 WALES (WILLIAMS)
Opens his body and passes into the side-netting as Szczesny dives the other way. Sudden death from here!
22:28
GOAL! POLAND 4-3 WALES (ZALEWSKI)
Ward guesses right, but an outswinging effort curls just above his hands.
22:27
POLAND 3-3 WALES (WILSON)
Another down the middle. I'm Szczesny, I'm standing for the next two.
22:26
GOAL! POLAND 3-2 WALES (FRANKOWSKI)
This lad can strike a ball, and he lashes hard and high into the roof
22:26
GOAL! POLAND 2-2 WALES (MOORE)
Goodness me, he leathers this, and it bounces off the bar, down and in ... just.
22:25
GOAL! POLAND 2-1 WALES (SZYMANSKI)
Smacked down the middle, Ward maybe gettig a hand. Not great, but there.
22:24
GOAL! POLAND 1-1 WALES (DAVIES)
Down the middle as Szczesny dives left.
22:24
GOAL! POLAND 1-0 WALES (LEWANDOWSKI)
A stutter, then a sweep left.
22:23
HERE WE GO!
22:21
WALES WIN ENDS
But Poland ti kick first. That's what you want - a disproportionate number of these are won by the team going first. Tahe crowd go mad singing Danny Ward's name. Imagine that, what a feeling. He and Szczesny walk together to the goalmouth.
22:21
DANNY WARD HAS A LOOK AT THE IPAD
Maybe he's got some Tetris on the go.
22:19
END OF EXTRA TIME: WALES 0-0 POLAND
Penalties it is!
120'
WE'LL HAVE ONE ADDITIONAL MINUTE
Poland again plough forward. But what's this?! Mepham, booked earlier on, goes to ground, probably gets a bit of the ball, and I'm not sure I'd book someone for that - though I know why this chap did. Wales mus tnow defend a free-kick....
120'
ZALEWSKI CROSS PAST THE BACK POST
And Frankowski retrieves, but when the ball comes back in, Ward falls upon it.

POLAND HAD THAT LITTLE PERIOD
Of looking more threatening while not threatening. It's a shame neither side has found the gumption to really commit to winning this, but without the quality to underpin it, I can understand the circumspection.
