League Two Oxford stun Swansea in third-round giant-killing as Kemar Roofe stars

FA Cup third round, Kassam Stadium - Oxford 3 (Sercombe 45, Roofe 49, 59) Swansea City (Montero 23, Gomis 66)
Kemar Roofe scored twice as League Two Oxford United enjoyed a famous victory over Swansea, who became the first Premier League casualties of this year’s FA Cup.
This was Alan Curtis’s first game in charge of Swansea since being appointed until the end of the season and, while the FA Cup is not a priority for the Swans given their struggles in the Premier League, a win would have stoked some much-needed confidence.
But Swansea were outfought and outplayed for long periods by an Oxford side brimming with confidence after just one defeat in their previous 15 games.
Swansea took the lead courtesy of Jefferson Montero, who exchanged passes with Marvin Emnes before finishing neatly. But a dubious penalty was awarded before the break and Liam Sercombe rifled it down the middle.
Oxford flew out of the blocks at the start of the second half and went ahead through Roofe, who raised the roof with a wonderfully curled effort inside the far post.
Roofe added a third shortly after, capping a blistering Oxford counter-attack, before Bafetimbi Gomis pulled one back late on for Swansea. But that goal proved in vain as Oxford held on for this season’s first FA Cup giant-killing.
TALKING POINT
Are the wheels coming off Swansea’s season? The Swans are sinking like a stone in the Premier League, struggling for goals, conceding too many and are now out of the FA Cup. The league is all they have to play for, and judging by this performance, their top flight status is far from certain.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Kemar Roofe (Oxford) – It’s not hard to see why a few Championship teams are tracking this talented 23-year-old. Took both of his goals superbly, in particular his accomplished first. A young man with a seemingly bright future.
