Chile were one goal from elimination in the Confederations Cup but held off a spirited challenge from Australia to draw 1-1 and reach the semi-finals.
Chile went close through Eduardo Vargas and Arturo Vidal, bringing good stops from Brighton's new keeper Mat Ryan. As Australia hacked Chile across the pitch, it seemed they would soon concede.
However, Australia scored against the run of play when JamesTroisi latched onto a loose ball to flick over Claudio Bravo.
In the second half, Chile made the breakthrough when Martin Rodriguez reacted to a knockdown from Vargas quicker than anyone else, securing their route to the semi-finals in second place behind Germany, on five points.
Australia fought hard, but they could not build on the dominance their energy and pressing gave them for much of the match.
Chile will now face Portugal in the semis, with Germany taking on Mexico.

TALKING POINT

Bravo has no future at Manchester City if he continues like this. City have already bought Ederson, but it was his terrible clearance which led to Australia's first half-goal. In the second half, he found himself adrift, out of his area and only Australia's lack of cutting edge saw them escape without conceding. His rattled nerves have not settled.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Mat Ryan (Australia): Brighton and Hove's new goalkeeper showed why he could well be a success in the Premier League. With his calmness in one-on-ones, he should provide resilient shot-stopping for a defence which will probably come under plenty of pressure. His kicking and handling seem solid and accurate, too.

12' - RYAN SAVE: Vargas is slipped in behind the defence on the inside left, and he fires a shot across the keeper, and Ryan stops it with his legs.
41' - GOAL! Chile 0-1 Australia. Troisi scores: Bravo pings a low ball up the pitch which is intercepted. Australia storm up the pitch with Kruse, whose pass is played on by Diaz to Troisi in space on the left, in the box, and he lifts a neat finish over the keeper.
65' - TROISI SHOT: Kruse attacks down the middle and lays it off for Maclaren on the right. Back to Troisi, and his rising shot from 30 yards is just over the bar.
67' - GOAL! Chile 1-1 Australia. Rodriguez scores: Mena crosses into the box from the left. It's headed up into the air, and then headed down by Vargas into the path of Rodriguez who hooks it around the keeper.
70' - VARGAS MISS: Sanchez drives down the left, steaming into the box with strength and intent. He flicks it back for Vargas, but he glances his effort inches wide of the post.
