Luciano Spalletti has cancelled his plans of a year-long sabbatical from football to take charge of the Italy national team. His appointment comes after the departure of Euro 2022-winning manager Roberto Mancini earlier this month. The fresh challenge for Spalletti comes after he guided Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years last season, which they won by 16 points.

Newcastle can be title 'contenders' says Guardiola

Former Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti has been named the new Italy manager, replacing Roberto Mancini.
The 64-year-old left his post as Napoli boss at the end of last season after delivering the club a first Serie A title in 33 years and has been rewarded with the national team job for his efforts.
He had planned a year away from football, but has made a swift return following the lucrative offer after Mancini left the position vacant following his departure earlier this month.
Mancini, who guided Manchester City to their first Premier League title in 2011/12, was in charge of the national team for five years.
His highlight was a triumphant Euro 2020 campaign when his side came from behind to beat England on penalties in the final at Wembley.
But devastation followed as Italy failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Spalletti will take the reins from September 1.
FIGC president Gabriele Gravina said: "The national team needed a great coach and I'm very happy that he accepted.
"His enthusiasm and his expertise will be fundamental for the challenges that await Italy in the coming months."
Before his iconic spell in Naples, where he won the Scudetto in 2022/23 by 16 points, Spalletti has also managed Roma, Inter Milan, and Zenit St Petersburg.
