Diego Ifran and a penalty from Xabi Prieto saw the hosts come back to take the points following Thiago Alcantara's first half opener, although Pep Guardiola had rested a number of players before the Blaugrana's Champions League semi-final with Real Madrid.

While Pep Guardiola's side are clear favourites to take the points prior to this match, the manager has every reason to be wary after the Txuri-urdin stunned his side with a 2-1 win at the end of April.

But it was arch-rivals Real Madrid who took the early plaudits by going one better with a 6-0 thrashing of Real Zaragoza.

Barcelona could have been forgiven for thinking their 5-0 thumping of last season's fourth-placed finishers Villareal would see them top La Liga after this campaign's opening fixtures.
