Vincent Kompany’s half-time substitution during the Manchester derby was not due to injury, manager Pep Guardiola said during his post-match press conference.
Kompany has struggled with recurring soft tissue muscle injuries since the beginning of last season but made a return to the starting XI over the weekend in the 1-1 draw with Southampton.
The Belgian captain was selected to start again against Manchester United in the fourth-round League Cup tie on Wednesday night, and the 30-year-old’s half-time substitution prompted fears that injury trouble had struck again but Guardiola dispelled those fears.
"Vincent Kompany had no injury. He told us he was tired and not ready for the 2nd half," Guardiola revealed after the match.
