Chelsea kept their hopes of lifting the EFL Cup alive with a stunning late turnaround to beat Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.

It required an injury time equaliser from Mikhailo Mudryk to send the game to penalties after a mistake from Kieran Trippier. In the shootout that followed Trippier then put his effort wide before Dorde Petrovic saved Matt Ritchie’s kick to put Chelsea through.

A classy finish by Callum Wilson had given Newcastle the lead after 16 minutes, after a long run from his own half. He appeared to have lost the ball on the edge of the area but a poor touch from Benoit Badiashile gifted Wilson the chance to curl a shot past Dorde Petrovic with the outside of his foot.

The hosts were dominant in possession throughout and hit the bar after just seven minutes through Connor Gallagher. Bruno Guimaraes later cleared a Raheem Sterling shot off the line and Nicolas Jackson dragged a shot just wide. Christopher Nkunku finally made his debut as a substitute in the second half, but Chelsea laboured in front of goal until Mudryk’s late intervention.

Chelsea advance to the semi-finals alongside Middlesbrough and Fulham. The fourth semi-finalist will be decided tomorrow when Liverpool play West Ham United.

Phew. About 15 minutes ago Chelsea looked nailed on to be going out of the competition. Now, they're in the semi-finals.

Chelsea have won it! Ritchie goes medium height and to the right, and Petrovic gets across to save it. Stamford Bridge goes off!

Mudryk rolls his effort in bottom left, with Dubravka diving definitively the other way.

Classy stuff! Guimaraes steps up, stutter steps and rolls it bottom right with Petrovic going the other way.

Up steps Nkunku, and he buries it high and left past Dubravka.

What a nightmare few minutes for Trippier. He drags his effort left and wide of the post.

Have that! Connor Gallager plants his effort into the top corner. Unstoppable.

Callum Wilson goes high and right, beating Petrovic who went the right way but got nowhere near it.

Cole Palmer drills it in low and to Dubravka's left.

Newcastle win choice of ends, and the shoot out will take place in front of their fans. Chelsea then get the chance to go first. Here we go, it's Cole Palmer up first.

That's the final whistle, but there's plenty of drama left; penalties incoming.

Newcastle give the ball away, and Guimaraes flattens the breaking Maatsen. Tempers are right up here, not helped by a supporter running on the pitch and barracking Dubravka after the equaliser.

Gallagher cynically hacks down Guimaraes and is booked.

Newcastle really undid themselves there. It's looking like pens now.

Oh my word, we're level! Gusto whips a bouncing cross to the back post; Trippier lets it bounce, but makes a hash of his header back to Dubravka. Mudryk steals in, and places the ball into the far corner!

Almiron could run a ball into the corner for Newcastle, but opts to shoot from a wide angle and Petrovic gathers easily. Given the stakes and time left, surely he should sit on that.

Gallagher and Livramento contest a loose ball in the bottom right corner. Gallagher wins it and gets into the area, but swan dives looking for a penalty. Nothing doing, and he really should be booked for that.

Mudryk lofts a beauty of a cross to the back post for Gusto. Livramento flies in to get his head on it, and almost puts it in at is own far post! Corner to Chelsea.
