Pressure mounted on Erik ten Hag and Manchester United again beaten at home in embarrassing fashion. Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock scored the goals as the holders were summarily dismissed by the side they beat in last season’s final – which seems a very long time ago now.

Newcastle had by far the better of the first half, better organised and more committed than a sorry United. They look the lead on 29 minutes when a terrific counter led by Timo Livramento was finished by Miguel Almiron, then doubled the advantage on 36 thanks to Lewis Hall’s beautifully controlled volley.

United mustered a spell of pressure after the break, but struggled to create and a Newcastle clincher seemed just as likely as a United livener. And sure enough, Willlock snaffled possession after Joelinton robbed Amrabat, his low finish cementing the result will almost half an hour still to play.

Little of note happened thereafter, Newcastle comfortably playing out time as their hosts huffed and puffed; they move into the next round. For Ten Hag, though, ejection from the Carabao Cup is the least of his worries.

NEWCASTLE
Are the inverse of United. There are reasons why they're good that have nothing to do with football, but they play like they know what they're doing, and commit fully to everything. They've absolutely monstered it in midfield tonight.

GARY NEVILLE GIVES LIVRAMENTO PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Fair enough, he's been excellent.

UNITED HAVE BEEN DREADFUL, AGAIN
They've no business being this bad, and Ten Hag needs to find an answer, quickly. It's not all his fault, of course, but despite everything, the performances should be better than this.

YET AGAIN
United move it alright, then someone has to do something, and Antony swats beyond the back post and behind. Of course he does.

A BOUNCING BALL INSIDE THE NEWCASTLE BOX
Rashford nods it to himself, nips across Krafth, and leathers a shot into the nearest pair of shins.

ANTONY LAYS BACK FOR FERNANDES
Who swipes over a terrific low cross, but at the far post, Rashford doesn't gamble, and United have to make do with a corner. Of course, nothing comes of it.

UNITED WORK AN OPPORTUNITY FOR FERNANDES TO SHOOT
And the effort is blocked at source. They're really struggling to pick holes in Newcastle, who are defending well but haven't been asked difficult questions.

OLD TRAFFORD IS EMPTYING
There are lots of reasons it's this bad, but it still shouldn't be this bad. Joelinton clatters Fernandes and is booked.

WAN-BISSAKA CHARGES FORWARD
But without any apparent idea of what he's going to do when he gets there. He's quickly crowded out.

UNITED HAVE TOTALLY FORGOTTEN HOW TO PLAY ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
A year ago, they were better than this, with worse players.

NEWCASTLE WIN A CORNER DOWN THE LEFT
And when United half-clear it, it winds up with Longstaff, 23yards out, right of centre ... and he controls, then absolutely annihilates a dig that almost floats the connection is so perfect, flying inches past the far post, halfway up.
