Insua has pulled his hamstring and has been withdrawn. He signalled to the bench as soon as he had done it, which is a shame because he had started the game at left-back quite well.

That was a foul! Ronaldo is played clean through on goal on the counter attack, with the Vallecano defender bringing him down cynically, but amazingly the referee doesn't give the decision.

Navas should have caught that. Bueno hits a pot shot from about 25 yards, with the Real Madrid keeper palming the ball away for a corner kick. He looks disappointed with himself.

I don't know whether Rayo Vallecano have been working on their crossing in training this week or something, but their deliveries into the box are giving Real Madrid something to think about.

Good chance for Ronaldo! Rodriguez plays the ball into the Real Madrid number seven, who sets himself for a shot from a tight angle, but he blasts his effort well over the crossbar.

Ronaldo is slotted through by Rodriguez, but the Portuguese number seven gets caught in two minds and ends up playing a loose pass to Marcelo when he should have picked out Benzema.

The away side win a corner, which prompts a moment of panic in the Real Madrid ranks when Benzema allows his marker to wriggle free, but Ramos makes amends to make the clearance.

Rayo Vallecano have responded well to going a goal down. Although they aren't causing much of a goal threat they are showing more intent in venturing into the Real Madrid half.

Real Madrid must pick up a result tonight if they are to return to top spot after Barcelona's comeback win earlier today. Los Blancos are currently in second spot.

Kakuta tries to get around Nacho in the right-back position, whipping a cross into the Real Madrid box. But the deflection takes it too close to Navas and Baptistao has no chance of reaching it.

Navas hasn't had much to do in these opening 10 minutes or so, but he's called upon to make a simple save from Bueno. There wasn't much threat on the effort, but it needed stopped.

So that didn't take long. The pass from Ronaldo to send Kroos to the byline was fantastic, and the pass from Kroos across the face of goal for Bale was too bad either.

Rayo can be a real threat on their day, but the problem for the team from the outskirts of Madrid is that those days are too few and far between. But they could be a threat tonight.

For the moment Bale seems to be on the right side of the attacking formation, with Rodriguez on the left, and Ronaldo and Benzema through the centre. That's how it looks anyway.
