Antoine Griezmann had put Atletico ahead after 25 minutes before Torres's attempted clearance saw him put the ball into his own net eight minutes before half-time.
Samuel Garcia Sanchez then added another for Malaga half-way through the second period and they looked set to claim all three points, but Griezmann spared both Atletico and Torres as he struck 12 minutes from time to earn a share of the points.
Atletico are third on 66 points, four clear of Valencia - but Valencia have a game in hand.
Elsewhere, Santi Mina hit four goals and Joaquin Larrivey scored twice as Celta Vigo crushed Rayo Vallecano 6-1 while Thomas Partey's double helped Almeria sweep past Granada 3-0.
