The first half performance from Real Madrid was blistering but they eased off in the second half. For a moment it looked like it might be double figures for Zidane's men, but they can still reflect on a generally excellent display. All things are going well so far.

James is doing his best to make an impression, but Sporting Gijon simply have too many players back in their own box. They shut up shot quite some time ago, and it has worked.

THAT'S BETTER FROM JESE! He completely bamboozled Mere as he surged forward into the penalty area, but his shot at goal was poor. Cuellar had an easy save to make.

Jese has allowed this chance to impress in the second half, largely. He's done a lot of running around but hasn't made much of an impact with the ball at his feet.

Sporting Gijon haven't posed much of a threat in the final third, but Zidane will perhaps look at the lack of a clean sheet as something of a blot on his copy book. Nit picking, of course.

So where will this result leave the Zidane reign so far, after two matches? Real Madrid have played within themselves for this second half, but the opening 30 minutes was a masterclass.

There's no tempo to this match now. Real Madrid are passing the ball around with complete ease, and Sporting are doing the same thing when they have possession. Just blow up now.

It is worth remembering how good they were in the first half, though. That's the best I have seen Real Madrid play all season. They were simply unstoppable. It could have been more.

But despite the likely margin of victory, Zidane will surely be somewhat unhappy with how his side have played since the break. They have eased off and allowed Sporting to play.

Modric has been impressive in the centre of midfield, just like he was in last week's game against Deportivo La Coruna. Zidane has completely restored the central midfield.

The fun was sucked out of this match a long time ago. Real Madrid have lost their grip of the contest, but the game was won in the first 10 minutes. It's been settled since then.

There's not a huge amount of fluidity in this match now. It has all got a little scrappy, and Real Madrid have been drawn into it too. Sporting Gijon have done well in this second half.

Victory here for Real Madrid will draw them closer to the leaders at the top of the Spanish Liga table. But both Atletico Madrid and Barcelona will play later this evening.

The weird thing is that Real Madrid might actually be somewhat disappointed if they don't add to their tally tonight. They raced into a 4-0 lead, but have stepped off the gas since then.

Sporting Gijon are enjoying a good spell of possession. They are finding some success in the Real Madrid half, as well. Menendez is making quite the impression in this second half.

Real Madrid have certainly eased off in this second half, but they have been disrupted by injuries. Both Bale and Benzema are crucial to the way Zidane likes to play football.
