Former Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has admitted he was surprised when Real Madrid signed Gareth Bale, saying the Welshman is not in the same league as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Van der Vaart played alongside Bale for two season between 2010 and 2012, after he left Real Madrid for first-team football in the Premier League.
The Dutchman subsequently moved on to Hamburg a year before Bale’s own exit from White Hart Lane - as he became the world’s most expensive player following his transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Bale has endured an up-and-down time in the Spanish capital since, and Van der Vaart says he was never sure why his old club wanted the left-footer.
“I never thought Bale would end up playing at Real Madrid,” Van der Vaart told Canal Plus.
“Bale isn't like Ronaldo or Messi. That's another level.”
