That wasn't a vintage performance from Real Madrid, but they looked comfortable, for the most part, as they coasted to victory. Zidane is back at the Santiago Bernabeu and he looks to have steadied the ship, somewhat, already. Asensio, Bale and Isco were impressive for the home side.

- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Real Madrid 2-0 Celta Vigo
Asensio, Bale and Isco have been the standout performers for Real Madrid this afternoon. Three players who were sidelined by Solari. One wonders what he's thinking right now...
The stands are now emptying at the Santiago Bernabeu, but while that has happened many times over the past few weeks in dismay, it's now happening in comfortability at the win.
Four minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match.
Marcelo has played well this afternoon. The Brazilian looked finished as a Real Madrid player, with speculation that he could leave for Juventus, but Zidane has placed his trust in the veteran.
Real Madrid felt their way into the game in the first half, but their performance in the second half has been much better. Zidane has given everyone around the club a big lift.
Next up for Real Madrid is a home game against Huesca. And then they have a trip to Mestalla to take on Valencia. That is probably their toughest game of the season still to play.
Bale goes down just inside the Celta Vigo penalty area, but there's no way that the Welsh winger has getting that. He has a wry smile on his face. The push wasn't strong enough for a pen.
PICTURE: Friends reunited.
- OffKarim BenzemaReal Madrid
- OnMariano DíazReal Madrid
Benzema comes off and on comes Mariano, who will be desperate to a grab a goal for himself here.
Celta Vigo have the look of a beaten team and this could get quite ugly for the visitors to the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid are still pressing and will fancy a third and maybe a fourth.
This second half performance from Real Madrid has been much better. Their display since the restart has been routine. Celta Vigo have hardly caused the home side to break sweat.
ASENSIO... just over! That was very close to being a third goal for Real Madrid. Asensio cut inside and unleashed the effort on the Celta Vigo goal, but it flashes just over the crossbar.
- GoalGareth BaleReal Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Real Madrid 2 (77 mins - Gareth Bale) Celta Vigo 0. It's a second goal for Real Madrid and Bale has made his mark! Marcelo threaded the pass through to the Welsh winger, who cut across his shot and guided the ball into the back of the net off the inside of the post. Real are out of sight now.
- OffLuka ModricReal Madrid
- OnFederico ValverdeReal Madrid
Modric comes off and is replaced by Valverde. The Croatian gets a standing ovation from the home fans.
PICTURE: Isco celebrates breaking the deadlock for Real Madrid.
- OffOkay YokusluRC Celta
- OnFran BeltranRC Celta
The third and final change for Celta Vigo and Beltran comes on for Okay. Can he make an impact?
This certainly hasn't been a vintage Real Madrid performance, some of the home fans might have expected better, but it must be said that the hosts have looked a bit more secure than they have of late.
Benzema on the voilley! That was a nice move from Real Madrid. Bale played the clipped pass to the French striker, but Benzema's volley strike was straight at the goalkeeper.
PICTURE: Back to winnings ways under Zizou?
- OffSofiane BoufalRC Celta
- OnAndrew HjulsagerRC Celta
Boufal comes off for Celta Vigo. He was both Celta Vigo's best and worst player today. Weird.
Dribble from Bale! A mazy run from the Welsh winger who forces the save from Ruben in the Celta Vigo goal. Bale might have been better playing the pass out to Kroos, though, rather than going alone.
Real Madrid have been liberated by that Isco goal. They look confident in their play and there's a chance that Celta Vigo could be blown away in the final 20 minutes or so of this match.
- OffIscoReal Madrid
- OnDani CeballosReal Madrid
Isco comes off having opened the scoring and Ceballos comes on in his place for the final 25 minutes.
That goal was created by Asensio and finished off by Isco - two players whose futures looked under threat when Lopetegui and Solari were in charge. What a way to pay back Zidane.
- GoalIscoReal Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Real Madrid 1 (62 mins - Isco) Celta Vigo 0. Wouldn't you just know that it would be Isco to score the first goal of Zidane's second spell as Real Madrid manager? Asensio skips past one and then two, plays it wide to Benzema, who squares for Isco to finish from close range in the middle. Real Madrid finally have the lead!
Will we see some changes from Zidane soon? He has options on the bench. Mariano is fit again and he would give Real Madrid someone to get on the end of the crosses into the box.
One of the things that the officials can be criticised for is the length of time it takes them to reach such decisions. The game was stopped for a solid four or five minutes there. Crazy.
It was Varane who was in front of the goalkeeper when the shot from Modric bounced past him and into the back of the net. Real Madrid can't have too many complaints about that.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... NO! Modric has the ball in the back of the net with a bouncing ball. However, there was a long delay to check whether an offside player was interfering and in the end the goal is chalked off. That was probably the correct decision.
What was he doing?! Oh wow. What a chance that was for Celta Vigo. They had three-on-two on the counter attack, but the final pace from Bouffal was dreadful. Straight into Navas' arms.
Bale goes in on Bouffal with a sliding tackle and concedes the foul. Keep in mind that the Welsh winger is already on a booking so he needs to keep his cool here. Walking on thin ice.
PICTURE: Marcelo has played reasonably well so far.
That was nice play between Modric and Isco. The Real Madrid playmaker had the chance to cut back a cross from the right side of the box, but it's blocked and the corner comes to nothing.
This has been a much more cautious performance from Real Madrid so far. They have not been as open as they have been in recent weeks and months. Is that deliberate?
Great skill! That was lovely from Marcelo to get to the byline and burst into the penalty box, but the Brazilian left back couldn't find a teammate with his comeback. Nobody gambling.
PICTURE: The incident between Bale and Vazquez in the first half.
Celta Vigo haven't won a game at the Santiago Bernabeu since 2006. Their recent record here is dreadful, but they will be pleased with their performance so far this afternoon.
We're still waiting for the first goal of the game. Real Madrid were starting to find their flow towards the end of the first half, but they have still failed to impress in the final third.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way! It's still goalless between Real Madrid and Celta Vigo.
What did you make of the first half at the Santiago Bernabeu? Has Zidane got his starting lineup wrong? Can Celta Vigo claim something from this game? Tweet me your thoughts!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Real Madrid 0-0 Celta Vigo. Still waiting for the first goal of the game, but there was a sense that Real Madrid were cranking things up towards the end of the first half.
Was Bale lucky? Looking at the replays of the disallowed goal, was Bale fortunate not to be shown a red card? It didn't look intentional, but that was a whack to the face of Vazquez.
Three minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the first half.
- Yellow cardGareth BaleReal Madrid
Some confusion here. It was Bale with the foul, but the yellow card has been shown to... Asensio?
GOOOOOOOOOOOO... NO! Real Madrid have a goal chalked off. Benzema had the ball in the back of he net, converting from a Bale cross. But the whistle had already gone for a foul. Bale put a hand into the face of Vazquez.
Sisto blows it! That's so frustrating for Celta Vigo. They had three players surging forward on the counter attack, but Sisto's cross-field pass is wild and the move breaks down.
No penalty given! That's a bold call by the officials. It looked like a certain foul by Vazquez on Asensio, but it might well be on the outside of the penalty box. Play has restarted.
VAR penalty review! The Santiago Bernabeu wants a spot kick for what they saw as a foul on Asensio off the ball inside the box. The officials are going to take a look at this incident.
Across the face of goal! That was an excellent low cross from Bale across the face of the Celta Vigo goal, but Benzema was on his heels and didn't expect the delivery from the Welshman.
Now it looks like Bale has moved over to the left side. The Welsh winger has done more in this half than he has for weeks. The Welsh winger is showing that he is still valuable. That he still belongs here.
Ramos heads wide! The Real Madrid captain comes close to adding to his tally for the season, heading wide from a corner kick. He might have scored that. The home side are starting to crank thing up now.
Marcelo shot! What a hit that was from the Brazilian left back. He would up the shot from 20 yards out, but Ruben did well to push the drive wide of the post and away for a corner kick.
Bouffal shot! That was a very good move from Celta Vigo. Sisto played a cross into Gomez, who knocked it back for his teammate. But the shot was blocked Varane before it could reach the goal.
Bale has probably been one of the better Real Madrid players on the pitch in this first half, although that isn't really saying much. The home side haven't really found their groove yet.
That would have been quite the way for Bale to open the account for Zidane in his second stint in charge of Real Madrid. The technique from the Welsh winger was exceptional.
Underside of the bar! So close to being an opener for Real Madrid! Asensio's cross into the box causes mayhem and falls to Bale, whose scissor kick comes off the underside of the crossbar!
Something happened! The Celta Vigo defenders stood off Kroos, allowing the German midfielder to wind up the shot on goal. However, the ball skiffs the top of the Celta Vigo net. Close.
Still nothing of any note happening...
To be honest, there's not a great deal happening in this match. It feels like a game between two teams in dreadful form. Which is, err, exactly what it is. So maybe not surprising.
PICTURE: Varane rises for a header against Celta Vigo.
That was quite a telling moment. Benzema went hard to press the goalkeeper, but then threw his arms up in frustration when he realised that his teammates had left him isolated.
Odriozola is the only member of the new generation at Real Madrid who has made the starting lineup this afternoon. The young right back has made quite the impression this season.
It's all a bit disjointed from Real Madrid. They have the look of a team that have lost their last four games on the spin. This is a team that has forgotten how to play together. Strange.
Real Madrid are struggling to get their passing game going, but Zidane doesn't look too concerned on the touchline. The Frenchman never looks very concerned about anything.
Navas is one of the very best at those sort of saves. It's still baffling that Real Madrid were so desperate to replace him last summer when other areas of their team needed attention.
What a save! That's why Navas is back in the Real Madrid team! The cross came into the box from the right wing, Gomez got his head on the end of the delivery, but the Costa Rican tips over!
You get the feeling that Celta Vigo are growing into this game. Real Madrid aren't having much joy in the final third of the pitch. Isco and Bale need to take a grip of things for the hosts.
PICTURE: Guess who's back?
Celta on the break! That was an opportunity for the away side. Real Madrid were caught up the pitch, with Gomez one-on-one with Ramos, but the Celta Vigo puts his shot well wide.
Deflected over! Lovely move from Real Madrid. Benzema slotted Marcelo in down the left, he cut it back for Isco, who turned back on himself, but his shot was deflected over the crossbar.
Still waiting for the first shot of the match. Celta Vigo have actually seen more of the ball in the opening 10 minutes. Real Madrid still just feeling their way into the match. Tentative.
So it looks like Bale is starting out on the right wing with Asensio on the left wing and Isco in behind Benzema. It's been a slow start to the match by Real Madrid, it must be said.
- OffDavid JuncàRC Celta
- OnWesley HoedtRC Celta
Indeed, there's the change for the away side and Junca comes off to be replaced by Hoedt.
Junca injury! It looks like Celta Vigo are going to be forced into an early change here. Junca appears to have pulled his groin in the opening stages of this match. He will come off.
Is there a player out there who has more of a point to prove than Isco? He has suspended by the club just last week after a fall out with Solari. Now, he's back in the first team.
It's all eyes on Real Madrid here, but it's actually Celta Vigo who need the points more in their fight against relegation. They are also on their third manager of the season. Struggling.
The new era starts at Real Madrid, although it looks a lot like the old era. There are more than a few players who have a point to prove this afternoon. This should be interesting.
- 1st Half
The match is under way at the Santiago Bernabeu! It's Real Madrid against Celta Vigo in La Liga.
Okay, here we go. About to get started at the Santiago Bernabeu. Kick off is just seconds away.
Nine months after Zidane walked away a European champion, he's back to save Real Madrid.
Not long until kick off at the Santiago Bernabeu. There's great anticipation ahead of this one. What will the reaction be?
Season over? Real Madrid's season has fallen apart very quickly. They're out of the Copa, out of the Liga title race and out of the Champions League. So what are they playing for? Top four?
Zidane is going with what, and who, he knows best. This is Isco's first start in the league since the Clasico in November. That was 17 games ago! The playmaker has come in from the cold!
All change! So... where to begin? Courtois has been dropped to the bench, with Navas back in the team. Marcelo starts over Reguilon and there are places for Bale and Isco as well! Zidane isn't hanging around in making big decisions.
Zidane is back! There's only one place to start! Zidane is Real Madrid manager again after his appointment on Monday. And boy has he made some bold decisions for his lineup today.
