Paul Mullin suffers punctured lung after Nathan Bishop challenge as Wrexham beat Manchester United in San Diego

Wrexham's pre-season win over Manchester United in San Diego was tainted by seeing striker Paul Mullin suffer a punctured lung. Mullin was injured during a challenge with United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop early in the game and was taken to hospital. Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said it was a "clumsy challenge" and Bishop should have been sent off instead of shown yellow.

Manchester United suffered defeat for the first time in their pre-season campaign as they lost 3-1 to Wrexham in San Diego.
Elliot Lee and Aaron Hayden scored in the first half to put Wrexham, who were promoted to League Two last season, ahead.
Marc Jurado pulled a goal back for a youthful United before half-time, but they were reduced to 10 men early in the second half when Dan Gore was sent off for a tackle on Andy Cannon.
Sam Dalby made it 3-1 with 20 minutes to go.
Jonny Evans was the most experienced player in action for United as he made his first start for the club since March 2015, having returned on a free transfer this summer.
Wrexham saw striker Paul Mullin suffer a punctured lung following an early challenge by United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop.
Mullin left the field in an oxygen mask following the collision and was taken to hospital.
“Mulls has got a small puncture in his lung, he’s in hospital at the moment," said Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson afterwards.
“It’s a clumsy challenge from the goalkeeper and, for me, there’s no need to make it.
"It’s a straight red. The reason it’s a straight red, and even if the ref said to me that maybe there’s a covering defender, it’s a dangerous challenge.
“If you add those two situations up, he should’ve been off the pitch. Listen, it’s a massive blow for us to lose Paul. He’s an outstanding player.”
The game was stopped for seven minutes following the incident and Bishop was shown a yellow card.
Wrexham start their League Two campaign against MK Dons on August 5 and will be hopeful Mullin, who was their top scorer last season with 38 goals, will be fit.
United finish their pre-season tour of the United States with games against Real Madrid (July 27) and Borussia Dortmund (July 31).
Their first game of the 2023/24 Premier League season is against Wolves on Monday, August 14.
