Carrick pokes the ball wide to Evra and the Frenchman slips a pass to Nani, who produces a wonderful inswinging cross from the left. He finds Rooney who turns the ball past Howard from close range with his head. A lovely goal.

A hint of controversy here as Rafael is brought to ground by a clumsy challenge from Osman right on the edge of the box, but United's appeals go ignored.

United look for an immediate response and Scholes almost levels! The ball pops out to him from a corner and his shot takes two deflections before Howard makes a wonderful save to claw the ball out and then grab it at the second attempt.

Hibbert delivers a deep cross from the right and Jelavic produces a glorious cushioned header at the back post from the tightest of angles that soars back over the head of De Gea and nestles just inside the far post.

Unlucky from Nani. He takes a 50-yard pass from Carrick in his stride before trying to get away from Tony Hibbert with a backheel. However, the ball runs out of play.

Nani with a vicious cross from the left and Howard is alert enough to save at his near post. That could have caught the Everton keeper out.

United will know the threat Gibson poses from range and after finding a pocket of space 25 yards from goal he unleashes a shot that skews away from goal.
