An Evra defensive header lands at the feet of Obertan who clips over a lovely cross that Ba attacks but Vidic gets a head on it! It lands to Ryan Taylor but he fires straight at De Gea!

Free-kick on the right that Ryan Taylor puts in but cleared by United, Jonas then fouling Carrick.

Young with a superb corner that Ferdinand attacks but just over him and cleared by Toon. Great ball.

Jonas tries the lollipops on the left but Nani of all people tackles him. United break and Hernandez's centre is put behind for a corner by ManUtd old-boy Simpson.

Ben Arfa on a mazy dribble but a strong tackle from Rio. Still with Toon though...

An open start to this match - United are going for Toon, who look tasty on the break.

A good spell for Toon comes to an end as Giggs wins a free-kick. Carrick plays it quick and long, Hernandez in acres of space and United could be in - but a dreadful cross from the Mexican is well beyond Rooney at the far post.

That was the best chance - and move - so far. Easy to see why Toon have done well this season. Jonas slips Ba in again but the flag is up.

Superb scooped pass by Ben Arfa releases Ba, who takes it first time on the volley but a smart low save from De Gea! Great football. Laudrup-esque pass from the Frenchman.

Carrick tries to swing it wide to Young but headed away easily and Toon break. Jonas on the left tries to get past Fabio but a good slide tackle from the Brazilian. High paced.

Super one-touch play from United as Rooney, Carrick and Nani combine, now Hernandez wriggles into the box but his low shot is blocked and trickles towards a grateful Krul.

Good skill from Obertan on the right but his cross is blocked and United can clear. A man with a point to prove.

Good spell for Newcastle but despite laying camp on the edge of the United box the shot doesn't come and the hosts break. Hernandez could be in now and he rasps in a shot that stings the palms of Krul who fields it comfortably in he end.

De Gea gets an early touch as Vidic shepherds it back to him.

Re: Berbatov - "He has an ankle knock" according to @JournoRich, who is a good authority on United matters. We were led to believe he had recovered from that and was fit. Cheers.

Giggs with a classy backheel to keep the ball in play and in ManUtd possession. Now Giggs in the middle slips it wide to Evra but his cross is poor and behind for a goal kick.

Giggs spreads it wide left to Young, a pinged first-time cross but Rooney isn't tall enough for that and it flies over his head for Coloccini to clear.

Jonas tries to release Ba but Vidic gets across to knock to touch. Direct opening from both sides.
