Now it is United's turn to apply pressure and after Distin gets a leg to a low effort from Cleverley, Pienaar pushes his luck when getting to grips with Nani in the box. Ultimately it is good work from the Everton man though as he draws the foul from his opponent.

Everton work the ball fantastically again and Fellaini leaps above his markers to knock the ball down to Osman. He has to the ball bounce across his body but then lashes an effort at goal on the spin from eight yards, De Gea making a fantastic reflex save.

And now United want a penalty. Kagawa releases Welbeck with a lovely pass and Jagielka appears to tug the striker back just on the edge of the box. Welbeck still pokes a shot wide but is bemused to see referee Marriner wave play on.

Chance for United! Rooney finds himself with the ball at his feet just 10 yards from goal but his fierce snapshot is too close to Howard.

Great work from Tony Hibbert as he fully extends his neck to head the ball away from Welbeck at the far post from a deep cross. Everton better in all areas of the pitch so far.

This has been a masterful display of physicality and quality from Fellaini. He is causing United no end of trouble. But now it is the turn of Baines to get into the box and almost pull the trigger. Everton are playing some lovely stuff at the moment.

Everton's mini-siege continues. Baines slips a pass to Pienaar on the edge of the box and the South African forces a fine save from De Gea with a wicked curling effort. Jelavic can't find a team-mate when collecting the loose ball and crossing though.

Stat from Infostrada: "Everton have won four of their last six PL home matches against Manchester clubs, losing only once."

Distin is required to stick a boot in at one end before Pienaar attempts to drive a shot home from 25 yards following a piece of chest control from Fellaini. He catches it wrong though and the ball flies off target.

Rooney takes it and swings his effort low towards the corner. Howard spots it and dives full-length to tip the ball round the post.

Kagawa flicks the ball square to Scholes and the midfielder pokes a neat pass into Rooney before being brought down as he sought the return ball. Free kick to United.

This is excellent stuff from Everton: they are really having a go at United and at present are the superior side. Fellaini a constant threat to this rather makeshift United defence.

The next corner arrives and Jelavic produces a gorgeous bit of control to pull the ball down at the far post and spin in one swift movement. The Belgian gets a shot away on the turn but pulls his effort wide of the post.

Jelavic, Pienaar and Osman combine in thrilling fashion and the Croatian striker then gets free in the box to test De Gea from a tight angle. From the corner, the ball pops out to Pienaar, who sees a floating header tipped over the bar by De Gea.

Nani is given too much space 20 yards from goal and is allowed to measure up a shot at goal that whistles just past Howard's far post. The keeper is rather unhappy with his defence and lets them know in no uncertain terms.

Cleverly feeds a quick pass into Rooney and the touch through for Kagawa is delightful. Kagawa then returns the favour with a backheel but it is just away from Rooney and United lose possession. Still, that's very encouraging.

Welbeck looks to flick the ball into the path of Rooney with the outside of his boot but after seeing his initial attempt blocked, he then follows up with a low shot that is also halted by an Everton boot.

Stat from Opta: "David De Gea ended last season with the best saves-to-shots ratio in the Premier League (77.9%)."

Nemanja Vidic races out to the right flank to foul Fellaini and Baines puts in a dangerous free kick that David De Gea gets a touch to under pressure. The keeper was clattered by Fellaini though and Fergie is furious no free kick was given. The young Spaniard needs a bit of treatment.

Lovely stuff from Fellaini as he escapes the clutches of Valencia and Carrick to drive into the pocket of space between them and hit the byline. Jelavic wants a pass to the centre but Fellaini takes the shot on from the tightest of angles and rattles the post!

It takes Scholes just 13 minutes to earn his first booking of the season. There will be plenty more. It's a typically terrible tackle as he flies into the back of Darron Gibson.
