Bale finds Walker in the channel on the right but the right-back, who has had a superb game, elects to try to beat Jaaskelainen at the near post. Defoe was well-placed in the box and throws a withering eye to his England teammate as his effort hits the side netting.

Dempsey, reinvigorated this half, receives the ball on the wrong side of Diame before firing across goal. Bale was lurking but the shot had too much on it and skids across the turf for a throw.

AVB has his detractors but his selection has been spot on here. Dawson has handled the physical presence of Carroll and now Cole very well with Lloris also putting in a dominant display.

Lennon leads another quick break but, with a man either side, his pass finds neither and the chance has gone. Spurs had a lot of men forward there. Tomkins goes long with a free-kick but Lloris claims.

Cole immediately gives away a free-kick for backing into Caulker – inauspicious start for the big man.
