This isn't a game that traditionally produces many goals, so the first one could be so crucial.

Oh dear. Diame cuts in from the left this time but his shot slices off the outside of his boot and goes out for a throw.

West Ham have started the brighter here, there's no doubt.

Diame plays a good early cross from the right towards Maiga, but Cameron gets a head on it.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes: "We have pursued a number of targets and got so far with them. Then all of a sudden it's just fallen away and not all for the same reason. This has been frustrating because you put a huge amount of work in initially, then all of a sudden one piece doesn't fit and it cannot be done. We do need a little bit more help, but if that's not possible I still have a group that is capable of doing well in the Premier League."

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce: "He might leave now - if anybody is going to leave now it's going to be Vaz Te. You don't keep someone who doesn't want to stay. If the club wants to make the right offer we will be more than happy than to accommodate that transfer request. He has already been tapped."

Stoke striker Peter Crouch is on the bench after missing the Potters' League Cup win through illness, although hat-trick hero Kenwyne Jones keeps his place. Jamie Ness has a thigh injury and is City's only certain absentee.
