Let's get this thing out of the way, then. I would prefer Everton to win because I predicted Martinez woud do well, and he's made me look silly so far.

Roberto Martinez: "I don't think in general we are lacking confidence, but I think this is a moment of the season that is pivotal for us - seeing how we can react. The reaction now has to be that we make sure we know what we are doing. We have a real understanding of how to perform and if we can keep that, the results will come."

Alan Pardew: "We’ve [Newcastle and Everton] had similar seasons really. We both probably feel as if we deserve more points than we’ve got but we are where we are. We’ve had terrible, terrible injuries which they haven’t suffered. I’m hoping 2015 is going to bring us a much better year than this year purely because we’re hopefully going to have more personnel available than I’ve had. It’s been a terrible year for injuries. It’s a fact.”

Eh, who’s that Luke Garbutt chap in the Everton team? The 21-year-old defender had made just a handful of appearances in minor competitions, but is now handed his first Premier League start by Roberto Martinez. Arouna Kone also earns the same honour – strange to think given he signed for the Toffees in July 2013.

Alan Pardew makes three changes from the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United as Mike Williamson, Cheick Tiote and Papiss Cisse come into the side for Steven Taylor, Vurnon Anita and Adam Armstrong. The Toon also welcome Davide Santon back into the squad for the first time since April following injury. The Italian takes his place on the bench.
