Good afternoon and welcome to Eurosport's live coverage of Southampton versus Manchester City. The first few months of the new Premier League season has offered up a wealth of questions and quandaries. Today, one of those questions may be answered: are Southampton genuine top four contenders or just quick starters? Ronald Koeman's team are currently second and on a six game unbeaten run yet this afternoon they face reigning champions Manchester City at home for the first real test of their calibre this campaign.

FULL-TIME: Southampton 0-3 Manchester City - In the end it was a well hewn victory for City who dictated the game, held their nerve and allowed their superior quality, both on the field and on the bench, to win the game for them. The deficit between the winners and their hosts was clear and cruel as far as Saints are concerned.

Tadic is again offside as he attempts to sneak down the left. Joe Hart takes the goal kick but it looks likely to be the final action of the game.

Tadic is flagged for offside after a series of half-hearted attempts by Souhampton's attackers to shoot while City failed to clear their box. Long and Pelle were also involved but it was the Serbian who stoped play as he ran offside to collect the loose ball as it broke.

City are now down to nine men, with only Martin Demichelis now the only central defender on the field for the visitors as Vincent Kompany limps off injury. Yaya Toure drops back into the middle of defence, just as he did to win the Champions League against Manchester United for Barcelona in 2009.

GOAL! Southampton 0-3 Man City (Clichy) - Gael Clichy scores his first goal for Manchester City from a wonderful pass from the outside of Sergio Aguero's right foot. The left-back finally punishes Southampton for failing to close the hole on the side of their defence. Aguero spotted the gap and the run to allow Clichy to find the net with an emphatic finish.

Victor Wanyama attempts two shots from deep in quick succession but Joe Hart is ready for them on both occassions and they neither look all that threatening

Two big chances at either end as Sergo Aguero is again played through but this time loses his footing. His slip allows Southampton to surge forward and play the ball to Bertrand who sends in an inviting cross that flashes in front of Hart's goal. Pelle stretches for the sliding finish but doesn't get there. It remains 2-0 in City's favour.

Fraser Forster shows some excellent decision making with Sergio Aguero played in to run free against the Sothampton keeper. Forster doesn't panic, keeps his head and stands his ground, eventually hooking the ball away as the Argentinian attempted to dribble round him.

SOUTHAMPTON SUB: Emannuel Mayuka comes on for Steven Davis as Koeman attempts to pull a trick from out of his sleeve in response to Lampard's strike. It could well be too little too late however.

GOAL! Southampton 0-2 Man City (Lampard) - Another super sub appearance for Frank Lampard, who City must surely be hoping will stay in January to extend his loan move from New York City FC. Again Southampton are at fault after being dispossessed high up the field and then failing to close down the midfielder.

Fernandinho is the City player who now looks to make the most out of Southampton's failure to secure both flanks at the back with the Brazilian running down the right and collecting a switching ball from the left. He can't quick find the angle though and shoots far too late straight into the side netting.

Southampton take the freekick won from Mangala's foul but it's headed out for a throw in. Clyne sends the ball back into play but City again defend well and Milner gets close to Pelle. Southampton need to push the game on into their opponent's half now. The likes of Lampard and Toure aren't the most athletic players due to their age and size respectively, and if the hosts can run down their opponents in the closing stages, they may yet get something.

MAN CITY SUB: Martin Demichelis comes on for Jesus Navas to shore up the backline after Mangala's dismissal.

Another calamitous day in the Premier League for Eliaquim Mangala who picks up a second yellow card after clumsily bundling over Pelle at the edge of City's area. Is this what £32 million buys you in defence these days?
73'
Jesus Navas takes a shot from the edge of the box after running free of his marker but it's not accurate enough to bother Fraser Forster, who still dives to try and save it. The ball instead skims wide and out for a goal kick.
71'
Aguero drops back and collects the ball as Lampard storms into the box. He dribbles through a couple of markers, gives the ball to his midfield teammate and the receives it as the corridor of Saints defenders closes around him in the left-side channel. Still, he is able to win a corner for his side even if they aren't able to produce anything from it.
70'
Tadic isn't happy. He complains to Jones that Clichy has gone in high on him with his elbow but the referee shakes his head and sends him away. The Serbian remonstrates with his marker who appears wide-eyed at the suggestion he had brought elbows into the equation on the flanks.
68'
It now apears that Lampard is playing at the tip of the midfield after Nasri left the pitch, with Fernandinho sitting deeper and Toure working between the two midfielders. With David Silva missing through injury, the Ivorian is City's key source of imagination at present. Can he fashion another chance or two from the hole to put this game beyond doubt?

SOUTHAMPTON SUB: Shane Long arrives on the field in place of Saido Mane, with the Ireland international called up to try and grab a foothold for his team up front.
