Timmy Sherwood is not a happy man. He's out of his dugout and waving his arms furiously, at one point seeming to draw a football with his fingers in mid-air before miming booting it with his right foot. Hopefully his team will be inspired by the outburst, as they haven't offered much so far.

The Kop has gone from booing their side in midweek to cheering every pass today. It really has been an impressive start, with the midfield three pulling the strings and Coutinho linking up well with the front two to find space between the lines.

The Aston Villa fans are pretty vocal in the away end, which is to their credit given the lack of quality football that their side have offered in the opening quarter of an hour.

Milner takes the corner along the ground, picking out Sturridge in an embarrassing amount of space inside the box. His first touch lets him down and he fails to make up for it with a clipped cross that offers little threat.

Coutinho wins Liverpool a corner, which Milner will take. There's a lot of pushing and shoving inside the box, with Ings involved in most of it.

Milner is pulling the strings in midfield in what has been his best start to a game in a Liverpool jersey. The Anfield faithful were delighted when they managed to get the England man on a free in the summer, but he hasn't exactly set the world alight on Merseyside since his arrival... until now, perhaps.

There weren't many who believed Rodgers when he defiantly said this in the build-up to the match. But his players are helping him out so far today with a slick performance.

Villa have got their act together and are keeping the ball well in an attempt to take the sting out of this lightning Liverpool start.

Ings has a pop from distance – allowed to do so again by a non-existent Villa defence – but he can't keep his shot down. Drifting into a central area behind Sturridge, Ings has looked very lively so far.

Liverpool are yet to score more than one goal in any of their games this season. They will surely never have a better chance of ending that run than today!

It's been a horror start for Villa, who are all over the place at the back and are giving Liverpool the run of things in midfield.

It's a huge afternoon for Rodgers and Liverpool at Anfield. There were boos from the Kop in midweek when they snuck past Carlisle in the League Cup and the fans will be expecting better today.

But the Villa boss has been in bullish spirits in the build-up, saying he wouldn’t even sell midfield star Jack Grealish for £60m. We believe you, Tim.
