Mata tries to play a 1-2 with Darmian, but Darmian waits for Mata to run into an offside position before releasing the ball.

Defoe holds up a cross well, then tries to roll in a ball for Van Aanholt's run, but Lingard is on hand to clear.

Mata releases Darmian down the right, into a great position behind the defence, but his cross is abominable.

Smalling is pressured into conceding a throw near his area after a Defoe chases him down. Van Aanholt runs onto a flick on from the throw, and Van Aanholt drags his shot wide.

Sam Allardyce does have the touch of a ruminant about him, when he chews his gum.

O'Shea with another clearance, putting his foot through a pass inside from Martial. Martial is back again, finds Carrick, and United wait for Carrick to pass it straight to N'Doye, who Martial fouls.

Another Darmian cross, and Khazri boots it away into touch. Rodwell is on for Kirchhoff.

Kirchhoff heads away Blind's corner, and in the process he does 'a' hamstring. He signals that he needs to come off and is down for treatment.

United have their first decent spell off possession in Sunderland's half. Darmian fires in a cross on the right, and O'Shea's clearance concedes a corner.

Van Aanholt's pass inside eventually runs to Defoe in the box, and somehow he miskicks as he has only De Gea to beat, but Smalling just about puts him off and the ball goes wide.

Schneiderlin tries to keep in a long ball from Smalling down the line, but it's out of play. Sunderland are in charge. Hein, meanwhile, has altered his target.

Mata almost slides in Rooney on a diagonal run, and his pass is knocked away by N'Doye.

Martial puts Yedlin on the floor. Not with trickery, but with a shove, which means Sunderland have a free kick in their own box.

Rooney receives the ball in the box from Mata, but as he attempts to shoot from close range, Van Aanholt is on hand to cover.

GOAL! Sunderland 1-0 Manchester United. Khazri scores - Khazri curls in a low free kick towards Defoe, who misses the ball with an attempted backheel. It skids along the pitch and takes De Gea by surprise, squeezing in.

Van Aanholt buys a cheap free kick off Darmian, knocking the ball past him and having his run blocked off. Free kick on the left, 35 yards out...

Hein is very optimistic. On the pitch, a diagonal long ball finds Darmian straining to keep the pass in play, but it's hit far too high.
