There's plenty to ponder for Tottenham's manager after this disappointing first-half showing.

Defoe twists away from his marker and curls a shot towards the Spurs goal, but again Lloris is perfectly positioned to make the save look comfortable.

Spurs miss Eriksen badly and need somebody to step up and take control of this game. Sunderland have had the best chances and the best of the play, which will be a big concern for Pochettino after his team's win-less start to the campaign.

Defoe is the most dangerous player on the pitch at the moment and squares a clever pass inside the area, which Alderweireld pokes back to his goalkeeper in the nick of time.

Tottenham make a complete mess of the set-piece and fail to even get it into the penalty area. Son smiles, more out of embarrassment than anything.

Chadli picks out a lovely pass to Kane, but Kaboul gets across quickly to block the shot and deflect it behind for a corner.

Both sets of players get a breather as Davies receives treatment for a blow to the face. It looks like it hurts, but the full-back should be fine to continue.

The Stadium of Light faithful have woken up and are getting on the back of referee Pawson for what they perceive to be a bit of big-team bias.

Defoe is played clean through on goal and places his shot past the onrushing Lloris... only for his effort to cannon back off the post. That's the best chance of the game so far, by a distance!

Lens has a pop from distance, but Lloris calmly watches the shot slide past his post.

There's been a frenetic pace to the game but neither side has managed to take control in the centre of the park. Spurs looked livelier early on, but Sunderland have found a foothold and are getting the ball in to Defoe with increasing regularity.

Alderweireld plays a nasty back-pass to Lloris, but the keeper does well to control on his thigh and clear his lines as Defoe closes him down at pace.

Kaboul strides forward from centre-back and ends up in a dangerous attacking position out on the left. The former Spurs man swings in a cross and wins his side a corner.

Vertonghen is late into a lunging challenge on Lens and deservedly goes into the referee's book.

Kane is given far too much space on the edge of the Sunderland box, but the England striker's shot rises narrowly over the bar.
