Antonio draws a foul out of Rojo, who committed himself ridiculously early to the challenge. It's yet another opportunity for the hosts to look for Carroll in the box.

United link up well in the final third, with Rooney, Martial and Mata combining. However there's no way through the wall of maroon jerseys.

The watching Hodgson may be impressed by some of the English Hammers, but he will be worries about Rooney. England's skipper is being bypassed in midfield and doesn't seem capable of living with the pace of West Ham's play.

It's pretty hard to comprehend how this West Ham are the same team (albeit with one change) to the one who capitulated against Swansea on Saturday. The performances are chalk and cheese.

Rooney has a pop from distance, but fails to keep his effort down. The England captain hasn't had much time to influence the game so far tonight, such is the intensity and dominance of the hosts.

Roy Hodgson is watching on from the stands at Upton Park and will have been impressed by the performances of a number of potential England internationals in the West Ham side so far.

A cross into the box takes a deflection and loops to the back post, where Antonio tucks home, but the assistant adjudges (correctly) that the ball went out of play en-route to the far stick and West Ham have to settle for a corner.

Carroll is played clean through on goal thanks to a horribly out of position Blind keeping him onside, but the striker fails to take advantage and shoots straight at De Gea in the United goal.

Carroll tees up Payet on the edge of the box, but the midfielder's shot flies straight at De Gea through a crowd of bodies.
