Tottenham are of course without Kane today, their talisman and the Premier League’s second top scorer with 19 goals, but the good news is that Son is in good form having hit a hat-trick against Millwall last time out in the FA Cup.

Tottenham beat Southampton 4-1 at St Mary’s earlier in the season.

Claude Puel knows he’s up against it today. “It will be a difficult game of course. They have stayed winning 10 games at home and that’s a long time,” he said pre-game. “I hope we can stop this situation and it’s a good challenge for us. We like these challenges and our players go into this game with ambitions. We will see the qualities and it’s a good opportunity to see after the first game against Tottenham if we can progress to win against this team.”

Nine of the players in that England squad are current or ex-Southampton players, while seven have been coached by Pochettino.

Both of these clubs were well-represented in Gareth Southgate’s England squad this week. Tottenham have three players present and Southampton four, with Nathan Redmond and Ward-Prowse called up for the first time.

"It will be tough,” was Pochettino’s message on today’s game. “They [Southampton] have very good players, it’s a very good team and for us, it will be key to get the three points but for that we need to play well and we need to deserve it over the 90 minutes. It will be a tough game because they are playing well.” He also had some nice words for James Ward-Prowse on his England call-up, saying he was "very happy” for his former player. "He is a great professional, a great player and he deserves to be called up for the national team because he’s a fighter and he’s a great, great professional,” Pochettino continued. "Me and the staff feel very happy because in the time we shared with him at Southampton, he was very important for us.”
