Spurs had gone behind to an early goal when Mohammed Salah scored within just three minutes.
The away side were on the ropes for much of the first half, but Spurs increased the pressure in the second half though struggled to find a way through.
Alli betrayed his side's desperation as much as their frustration in the 69th minute, when he took an obvious dive in the box under the attention of Dejan Lovren and Andrew Robertson.

The England international playmaker was booked, and gestured as if to admit he deserved a caution.
While Alli has something of a reputation for diving, and Liverpool fans will feel particularly aggrieved, he won't face a ban. Players can only face retrospective if their dive goes unnoticed during the game - a quirk of the rules which the Premier League will come under increasing pressure to change.
However Spurs went on to win two penalties, the first when Kane performed an exaggerated tumble over Loris Karius in the box. While there was contact, Kane was already on the way down when Karius touched him - the striker's penalty was saved.
There was yet more drama when Jon Moss was advised by his assistant referee to award a penalty he had initially waved away, when Virgil van Dijk kicked Erik Lamela in the box, and this time Kane converted in the last seconds of injury time to rescue a 2-2 draw.
