Sergio Aguero equalled the club’s goal-scoring record as Manchester City won their 11th consecutive game with a 3-0 victory over Burnley at a rain-swept Etihad.
The Argentine - who now has 177 goals for the Citizens, the same number as Eric Brook – opened the scoring on 30 minutes from the spot after Bernardo Silva went down easily under the challenge of Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope.
The difficult weather conditions made free-flowing football difficult and City were far from their brilliant best, but two goals in three minutes after the restart put the hosts out of sight; first Nicolas Otamendi headed home from Kevin De Bruyne’s corner delivery and moments later De Bruyne’s exquisite pass released Leroy Sane, who converted City’s third.
Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield means Pep Guardiola’s side move five points clear at the top of the Premier League, while Burnley drop to eighth.

TALKING POINT

Burnley pay the penalty: Nick Pope did make contact with Bernardo Silva, but was it enough to bring him down, and should the penalty have been given? That is debatable, and Sean Dyche will likely feel hard done by when he looks back at the replay. His counterpart Pep Guardiola will care little, though. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss won’t be pleased with his side’s performance, but he will be satisfied with yet another convincing result and the current league standings. It is hard to imagine City letting such a healthy lead at the top of the table slip, although it is very early in the season.

MAN OF THE MATCH

John Stones (Manchester City): The England international had little defending to do, but he did have a big part to play in his side’s victory. He started several attacks with his cool head and neat passing out from the back.

KEY MOMENTS

22’ - GOOD SAVE! That is more like the free-flowing City we know. Sane drives to the by-line, plays a clever cut back to Bernardo, who lets fly, but Pope does well to parry the ball away from his goal.
27’ - PENALTY TO CITY! Bernardo is brought down in the box by Pope. It looked soft and the Burnley players are absolutely fuming!
30’ - GOAL! Aguero sends Pope the wrong way as he strokes the ball into the bottom corner. The Argentine is now level with Eric Brook at the top of Man City's all-time goalscoring chart with 177 goals.
41’ - BURNLEY CHANCE! The visitors close down De Bruyne as he tries to play his way out from the back, the ball is teed up for Arfield to have a shot but it takes a deflection and narrowly goes over Ederson's goal.
73’ - GOAL! Otamendi heads in City's second! The defender rises above Mee to power home from De Bruyne's corner. It is so cruel on Burnley, but City will care little. They are heading for yet another victory.
75’ - GOAL! Sane makes it three! They are running away it now! De Bruyne's exquisite pass releases Sane, and he makes no mistake as he slides the ball past Pope and into the bottom corner.
