Sky Sports News reports that United have activated a clause in his contract which means De Gea is now tied to the club until the summer of 2020, rather than his deal expiring in June.
De Gea, who has been linked with a move away from United, would have been free to discuss terms with foreign clubs over a free transfer as early as January had the Premier League club not extended his deal.
The Spain No. 1 signed for United in 2011 and has made 333 appearances, winning the club’s player of the year award on four occasions.
The news comes on the day that United signed youth goalkeeper Paul Woolston on a free transfer.

Longer-term deal in pipeline

The Mirror reports that the extension is a precursor to United attempting to tie De Gea down to a new long-term deal. The paper explains:
United were keen to avoid the spectre of losing one of their best players in the summer on a Bosman and have bought themselves another 12 months in their attempts to persuade him to sign a new deal. United have made some progress in negotiations and it is understood De Gea is prepared to extend his seven-year spell at Old Trafford if he is given a pay rise to match top earner Alexis Sanchez. De Gea is believed to have rejected an offer of around £275,000-a-week and wants at least £300,000-a-week as his basic salary.
If a new deal cannot be agreed by the summer of 2019 then United may have to consider selling De Gea - with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus said to be among his suitors.
