NO PENALTY! For the second time in this first-half, Southampton are denied a penalty! Young appears to be pulling back Bertrand but Attwell waves play on. It's either a foul or a dive...

SO CLOSE! A corner is delivered from the right. Smalling gets his head on it but can't direct it on target. Rashford is free at the far post but can't sort his feet to turn it in!

MISS! Pereira swings in a pin-point cross but, with the goal gaping, Lukaku can only glance it wide!

CHANCE! And from the resulting corner, Shaw is played in space on the overlap. He centres it but Rashford and Lukaku get in each other's way and neither can get a strike away.

United win a corner, but Bertrand is furious. The referee felt the ball came off the Southampton defender last; he is adamant it didn't.

The Norwegian is very animated on the touchlines. His side allowed complacency to creep in after a fast opening.

Should De Gea have done better? The replays suggest so.

Ward-Prowse delivers a dangerous cross to the near post but Austin had already pulled away towards the centre-spot. The Saints have the momentum now.

It's Valery's first goal in senior football as well! What a strike, at Old Trafford, beating one of the world's best goalkeepers. Not a bad way to break your duck.

GOAL! Manchester United 0-1 Southampton
VALERY SCORES! The Saints are ahead! And what a strike it is. Twenty-five yards out, Valery catches a shot clean as you like and De Gea gets a touch to it but can't keep it out!

After a tricky start, Southampton have grown into the game. Valery's cross from deep is headed behind by Young, with De Gea showing some hesitancy. The Saints have a corner. Everyone in red is back to defend the set-piece and they manage to clear.

Thankfully, Gunn is back to his feet and fit to continue. The early injuries have upset United's rhyhtm.

Gunn has been in top form but now there is a concern about the Southampton shot-stopper. Rashford, who is an offside position as he races through on goal, collides with the visiting goalkeeper.

Just had a look at the replay and United have definitely got away with one there. Anywhere else on the pitch and that is a foul.

NO PENALTY! Southampton are appealing for a spot-kick, and they have a strong case. Smalling was clearly pulling Bertrand back with the referee well placed but Stuart Attwell says no foul.

McTominay is back to his feet and returns to action after some treatment. The United staff will be keeping an eye on the young midfielder for the next few minutes.

Fred, who was perhaps harshly dropped after a decent performance in midweek, is warming up in case McTominay can't continue.
