This is a result that puts Manchester City back on track. It lifts them back up to second place in the Premier League table, narrowing the gap on Liverpool to seen points ahead of that crucial clash at the Etihad in just four days time. Southampton are back in trouble on the edge of the bottom three.

That was an opportunity for Man City to add a fourth to the score sheet, with Sterling and Jesus flooding forward on the counter attack. But the move breaks down for the away side.

There was a point in the first half where this looked like being a real test for Man . However, Guardiola's men responded well and this result will put them back on track.

Walker was left out of the City starting lineup, but he comes on for the final few minutes.

Hjojberg had probably been Southampton's best outfield player until that moment. He scored the equaliser and had held his own against the Man City midfield unit. That was a shocker, though.

SENT OFF! Hojbjerg is shown a red card for a shocking tackle on Fernandinho. That was a reckless lunge from the Southampton midfielder and he will be a big miss for Saints.

Another change for Man City and Sane comes on for the final six minutes or so.

Shot on target! That was a decent attempt from Hojbjerg, who fired off a looping effort from 20 yards out. It was straight at Ederson, though, and the City goalkeeper makes the save.

Southampton are still in this game, but if they are to mount a late fightback then you would think that they will need a goal soon. City are coasting as things currently stand.

Mahrez should score! Jesus played a wonderful pass through to Mahrez, but McCarthy comes off his line to make the save and keep his team in the contest. Mahrez should have found the net.

As already mentioned, Guardiola will be pleased with the general performance of his team. However, he will surely be concerned by the fact City have yet again failed to keep a clean sheet.

Danilo has played quite well this afternoon. There have been some questions over Walker of late and so the former Real Madrid full back has done a decent job deputising for him.

The yellow cards are flowing now and Danilo is the latest to enter the book.

Hassenhuttl has made an impression since his appointment at Southampton a few weeks ago, but this defeat will leave them perilously close to the bottom three once again.
