That, perhaps, is evidence of the stasis at Everton while a Big Six has formed ahead of them in the Premier League. They should fancy today though; although they have not won at any of Tottenham’s stadiums since 2008, Everton have taken seven points from the last nine without conceding a goal. By contrast Tottenham have lost the last two in their new stadium, against West Ham and Ajax, without finding the net themselves.

Everton will be interested in what happens at Leicester as well. A defeat against Tottenham today offers Leicester the chance to leapfrog the Blues into 8th position. Last season Everton finished in 8th place with 49 points. They’re currently sat on 53, but no closer to the European football that they missed out on last season.

Although that final in Madrid is in the bank for June 1, there are no guarantees that Tottenham will win it. Therefore, they still need to secure fourth place in the Premier League to be certain of having another crack at the Champions League next year. One point will put it beyond any mathematical anxiety and keep Arsenal in fifth place. Spurs could even finish third, if they win today and Chelsea fail to win at Leicester City.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, you’ll be aware that it’s been something of a seismic week for Tottenham. On Wednesday they secured a place in the first Champions League final in the history of the club, via that astonishing second half comeback against Ajax in Amsterdam.

Son Heung-min and Juan Foyth are suspended for Tottenham after their misdemeanours against Bournemouth last weekend. For Everton their forward starlet Richarlison, who turned 22 this week, is out due to bashed-up ribs. It’s not immediately clear what formation Everton have plumped for with that line-up, but it appears to be three at the back.
