The subtext to today’s game will not be any recent domestic dust-ups, but the epic second leg of the Champions League quarter-final between these two at the Etihad in April. Spurs progressed on away goals. Could we possibly get anything as dramatic today?

If Tottenham are to kick on and become genuine title contenders this season, they need to toughen up on the road. They won 11 and lost eight on their travels last season as Liverpool and Manchester City steadily pulled away from them. A win or even a result here could be a huge step in the right direction – they last won here in the Premier League in 2016.

Manchester City could scarcely have made a more chilling start to their quest for a hat-trick of Premier League titles. Their 5-0 evisceration of West Ham at London Stadium was a warning shot to the rest of the league. Today is an early test of their 2019-20 credentials. They’ve won their last fifteen Premier League games; can anyone stop them?

Just one change for Tottenham from their 3-1 win at home to Aston Villa last week – Christian Eriksen, heavily rumoured to be leaving the club, returns to the starting XI in place of Lucas Moura.

City ring the changes; Stones, David Silva, Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus don’t start today, replaced by Laporte, Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Aguero. That’s some strength in depth.
