Full-time: This one is all over. Aston Villa move into the top half of the Premier League as their impressive campaign continues. In stark contrast, Newcastle fall to a fourth consecutive league defeat and are in free-fall.
Gayle shoots well wide with an overhead kick after Villa only partially clear a corner. That sums up Newcastle's night. They have been absolutely dreadful.
There will be FOUR minutes of added time to play here at Villa Park.
Grealish is sulking. He's not pleased to be subbed. Not at all.
- OffJack GrealishAston Villa
- OnJacob RamseyAston Villa
Villa sub: Grealish makes way for Jacob Ramsey, which is a surprise.
Another driving run from Grealish, who finds Watkins. He goes down inside the box under pressure from Lascelles - but it's never a penalty.
Newcastle will remain 16th, seven points above the drop zone, while Villa will climb up to eighth.
Time is fast running out for Newcastle to garner anything at Villa Park. A comeback has never looked likely.
- OffMiguel AlmirónNewcastle United
- OnDwight GayleNewcastle United
Newcastle sub: Dwight Gayle comes on for Almiron in a last throw of the dice for Bruce.
- OffBertrand TraoréAston Villa
- OnTrezeguetAston Villa
Double Villa sub: Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet come on for Barkley and Traore for the last 10 minutes.
Newcastle are finally having a sustained spell of possession, but there's no end product. There's no one in the middle as another attack collapses.
There has been a small improvement from Newcastle since the double substitution, as Hayden receives the pass from Almiron and win the corner. But again the set-piece comes to nothing.
Barkley finds Grealish, who bursts into the penalty area with intent. He curls his shot towards the top corner but gets too much on it and Newcastle survive on this occasion.
Fraser is immediately involved as Newcastle make a rare foray forward. Konsa is across quickly to make a successful challenge just as the substitute was about to shoot, though.
- OffJavier ManquilloNewcastle United
- OnAllan Saint-MaximinNewcastle United
Double Newcastle sub: Finally, Bruce makes a move, as Fraser and Saint-Maximin come on for Manquillo and Carroll.
Villa continue to exert pressure in search of a third. Traore's cross is cleared at the expense of a corner. Grealish's delivery is cleared, but Traore keeps it alive with a cross to the far post. Barkley can't turn it in with a back-heel and Newcastle have a goal-kick.
Manquillo is down and requires treatment after a fair but strong challenge from Grealish. He's going to be fine to continue, but with 25 minutes remaining Bruce still hasn't made a substitution, although Saint-Maximin is finally warming up.
Wilson wins Newcastle a corner, but to no avail as Mings rises highest to clear Shelvey's delivery.
You may have expected a response from Newcastle after such a lacklustre first half. But nothing. It's Villa who are in total control of possession and they have yet to really break sweat since the restart.
Newcastle's body language is not good. They are not pressing anywhere near as quickly enough as they should be. Their energy levels are worrying.
- Yellow cardJamaal LascellesNewcastle United
Yellow card! Lascelles is booked now for a foul on Grealish.
Ten minutes into the second half and although Villa are still dominant, there are no signs of any imminent change for Newcastle.
- Yellow cardAndy CarrollNewcastle United
Yellow card! Carroll goes into the book for a late sliding challenge on Nakamba.
Villa have started the second half on the front foot, and it's far too easy as they build another threatening attack. Grealish curls a low ball across the face but Watkins hadn't quite anticipated the delivery and can't get on the end of it.
Villa chance! Newcastle's defence is carved open once more as Watkins races through on goal. Darlow makes the stop but Lewis' makes a total mess of his clearance, gifting the ball to Luiz who fails to punish the visitors as his shot drifts wide.
- 2nd Half
Kick-off! There are no changes at the break as Newcastle get the second half underway.
- End of 1st Half
Half-time: Aston Villa are cruising and comfortably lead thanks to goals from Ollie Watkins and Bertrand Traore.
Two minutes will be added on at the end of the first half.
It's difficult to see a way back for Newcastle now. The visitors were appealing for a free-kick in the build-up to Villa's second. They felt Darlow was fouled as he punched the corner delivery clear. But take absolutely nothing away from Traore's goal, it was first class.
- GoalBertrand TraoréAston Villa
GOAL! Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle (Bertrand Traore): That should do it! Newcastle fail to clear their lines from a corner, and it's lovely football from Villa as Traore plays a one-two with Grealish and fires it into the top corner off the post. Much, much too easy for Villa.
Martinez competes with Carroll as Lewis' cross comes into the box, and the Villa goalkeeper wins the foul.
Almiron has gone to the right flank now, as Bruce looks to find a way back into the game.
Watkins' movement is causing Newcastle all kind of problems. He goes down inside the penalty area after contact from Schar, but the referee isn't interested in any Villa appeals and VAR doesn't overturn the decision.
Goal disallowed! Villa have the ball in the back of the net for the second time after a lovely move - but it's not going to count. Watkins latches onto Grealish's through ball and it's a great left-footed finish from the forward. But he was a yard or so offside.
Newcastle chance! Much better from the visitors, who seem to be growing in confidence. Almiron is proving to be their danger man as he picks out Carroll with a cross. He heads it down, it bounces off Mings and Martinez gathers.
Newcastle chance! Almiron delivers the kind of cross Carroll thrives on, but the forward fails to make clean contact on his header as the visitors' frustration increases.
- Yellow cardFabian SchärNewcastle United
Yellow card! After his mistake led to Villa's opener, Schar now goes into the book for a foul on Watkins as his night goes from bad to worse.
Newcastle win a corner, Shelvey takes and for the first time this evening it's a decent delivery. Lascelle gets his head on it but Mings is there to make the block.
Question marks over Darlow here. Why not use his hands while challenging Watkins?
Villa have taken the lead in eight Premier League games this season. They've gone on to win every time.
Clever from Targett, who wins a free-kick from Manquillo in his own half to relieve the pressure on Villa.
Newcastle are patient in their build-up as they search for a much-needed equaliser, but Manquillo's cross is headed clear by Mings.
Villa chance! A let off for Newcastle as Barkley meets Traore's free-kick but can't guide his header on target. Awful defending again from Bruce's side, who look totally devoid of confidence.
Schar goes someway to making amends for that mistake by nipping in front of Grealish and ending another Villa attack.
- GoalOllie WatkinsAston Villa
GOAL! Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle (Ollie Watkins): Villa are ahead! More misery for Newcastle. Not for the first time, Targett gets far too much space on the flank to deliver a low cross. Schar doesn't get enough on his sliding clearance and Watkins pounces to end his goal drought and give the hosts the lead.
Villa build a move down the left flank, Targett wraps his foot around a teasing cross but Watkins, on the stretch, just can't reach it and the ball evades everyone in the penalty area.
After a slow start, Villa are exerting pressure now. Lascelles is well positioned to clear from Cash's cross.
Cash wins Villa their first corner of the match. It's played short and worked to Targett, who shoots from 30 yards. Any deflection may take it past Darlow but there's no contact and the Newcastle goalkeeper makes the stop.
Almiron picks up a pocket of space on the edge of the box but rather scuffs his shot and it's the easiest of saves for Villa goalkeeper Martinez.
Villa are appealing for offside as Wilson gets in between centre-back and full-back to receive the ball wide left. The flag stays down. but the cross is cut out by Nakamba before Grealish wins a foul to take the early pressure off the hosts.
Kick-off! The players, staff and officials take the knee before Villa get us underway!
Five minutes until kick-off! It's Aston Villa versus Newcastle in the Premier League, it's LIVE and it's NEXT!
Is it time to end Bruce's time at Tyneside? That was the question raised as Newcastle crashed to a heavy defeat at Arsenal last time out.
Last time out, Villa defended excellently but ultimately fell to late goals as Man City continued their hot run of form.
John Terry is standing on for Smith on the touchline tonight, and he told Sky Sports: "It's nice coming home after three defeats, the players feel comfortable here. Steve [Bruce] is a great manager and will have them up for it tonight against his old club. But we are at home and fancy ourselves to pick up three points."
Aston Villa start the match in 11th place but Smith's side have games in hand on all clubs above them and can move as high as eighth with victory tonight. Villa are looking to keep three consecutive home clean sheets within the same Premier League campaign for the first time since December 2012 under Paul Lambert.
Pre-match stat: Aston Villa have won just one of their last 12 Premier League games against Newcastle (D6 L5), though they are unbeaten in four against the Magpies (W1 D3), winning 2-0 in this exact fixture last season.
Bruce on his former club Villa: "Aston Villa have made a huge investment in the last couple of seasons in particular. But they've bought very well. In two years I think the only player who will probably play tomorrow is (Jack) Grealish. The owners, when I was there, did their utmost to make sure they weren’t going to lose their crown jewel in Jack Grealish, who has flourished."
Smith on Newcastle: "They had a great start to the season with a great result at West Ham. You could see that the players all look bright and that they’ve got goalscorers within the team. They’re just going through one of those periods at the minute. We went through one last season – we haven’t had a period like it this season. You’re just waiting for something to kickstart you, and I’m sure it will. We have to make sure that it’s not against us.”
Steve Bruce makes FOUR changes to the Newcastle side beaten convincingly at Arsenal on Monday night. Javier Manquillo, Fabian Schär, Isaac Hayden and Jeff Hendrick come in for Joelinton, Matty Longstaff, Emil Krafth, all of whom drop to the bench, and Federico Fernández, who drops out of the matchday squad altogether. Goal-shy Newcastle are boosted by the fact Allan Saint-Maximin is back among the substitutes.
Marvelous Nakamba comes into the Villa side to replace the suspended John McGinn in Dean Smith's only change to the team that lost 2-0 to Manchester City on Wednesday night. Smith will be watching from the directors’ box following his dismissal at the Etihad Stadium.
