A dangerous Liverpool attack sees a shot deflect to Robertson in plenty of space on the left edge of the box. The full back takes aim but skews his driven effort over the top.

Liverpool have had 64 per cent of the ball so far but there's been little noteworthy action to get the pulse throbbing as of yet.

Incidentally, this is Shaqiri's 50th game for Liverpool in league and cup. He scored twice against United here two seasons ago after coming off the bench.

This is the first time United have been top of the table after as many as 17 matches in a season since the final day of their title-winning campaign in 2012-13 under Sir Alex Ferguson. However, Ferguson says he is glad he does not have to face the current "phenomenal" Liverpool as a manager.

Paul Pogba: “Obviously we cannot say now we are at the same level as them (Liverpool) because they won the Premier League and keep winning so the day we win - that is when we say we are at the same level. We know their quality and how they play. It's always been a tough game. we know how difficult it will be and we just have to focus and try to stay at the top. I think we can win it if we keep our focus but there's a lot of teams that can win it - we are not there yet, we are still very far."

Bruno Fernandes on title history: “You don't want your rivals at the same level as you. For the fans, the next day, going to talk to their friends who may be Liverpool fans it'll be much better if they've been the winner rather than the loser. And it would be a lot more fun with 21 titles and Liverpool still on 19."

Sadio Mane: “I think as a striker you would always love to score more goals. But goals are not a big deal because I would sooner we win as a team. That’s more important. But for myself, I will work harder and harder to get more goals this season than last year to help the team and try to win the league, which is our big target.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: “You don't get anything for being at the top of the league in January, it's not ever something we have valued. It's where you end up at the end of the season that matters."
