Good evening and welcome to our live text coverage of the Premier League match between Southampton and Newcastle from St Mary's Stadium! After a testing few games the Saints have found their feet and been in fantastic form, rising to 5th in the table on 13 points with recent wins against Aston Villa and Everton being impressive due to both those opponents' own strong starts to the season. However, with talisman Danny Ings out injured for 4-6 weeks, Southampton will be hoping that Che Adams can continue his recent run of scoring to lead the line by himself or perhaps with a different strike partner. Newcastle, on the other hand, are nestled in 11th place with inconsistency holding them back despite finally finding a reliable goalscorer in Callum Wilson and a dynamic creator in Allan Saint-Maximin. Fans will be still rueing the failed takeover from this year but the club have still made a decent investment in signings, while Steve Bruce is probably doing better as manager than people

FULL-TIME: Southampton 2-0 Newcastle United
A well deserved win for the Saints against a Magpies side that offered very little and seemed overwhelmed by Southampton's pressing in midfield. The home side were wasteful but that won't matter as they go to the top of the top-flight table for the first time since 16th September 1988, making this their best start to the Premier League season.

CLOSE!! Redmond is brought down just outside the box and the ball rolls to Armstrong. He brings it onto his left and strikes it in search of his second goal but Darlow saves it well.

Sean Longstaff lets his frustration get the better of him and gets a yellow card for pulling at Ward-Prowse.

Shane Long was left out of the most recent Republic of Ireland squad but he'll get a run out here in this game as he replaces Walcott up front.

WHAT A SAVE!! That's a great cross in from Lewis and Joelinton powers a header goalwards while on the move and McCarthy between the Southampton sticks miraculously finds a way to push it away.

GOOOOOAAAAALLL!!! Southampton finally add to their lead. Armstrong wrongfoots Lascelles and Fernandez with some fancy footwork in the box before slotting home in the bottom right corner to make it 2-0.

The second switch sees Brazilian attacker Joelinton come on for Murphy. As Murphy was playing right wing-back that suggests a change in formation to one that features a back 4.

An late attacking double change for Newcastle! The first of the dual switch sees Andy Carroll come on for Wilson, who has not seen much of the ball today.

CLOSE!! Another big chance wasted by Southampton as Adam sends Armstrong through in lots of space. The Scot makes his way into the box and tries to slip it through to Walcott but there's not enough on the pass and Lascelles slides in to get it away first. At first glance it looks a fair tackle but looking at replays that appears to be a very bad challenge and perhaps should have been given as a penalty.

Djenepo departs the pitch for Nathan Redmond. Djenepo has had a quite good game but has been hindered by not playing with a natural left-back today, meaning that he has had to cut inside and pass inwards a lot more.

Armstrong gives away a free-kick in a very good position after battling for the ball with Sean Longstaff. Murphy tries to curl in the free-kick but it is into the wall and cleared away.

Matty Longstaff comes on for Hendrick in central midfield for Newcastle! He was linked with a move in the summer but eventually stayed put.

Djenepo goes down inside the box, but that looks very soft and would be harsh on Murphy. It just looks like the Malian winger tripped himself really.

Through ball from Ward-Prowse to Adams that looks offside but was not given. Adams switches it to Djenepo on the left but he is a little bit ponderous and his cross is blocked, sending it out for a corner.

Newcastle are fortunate to still be in this considering how many chances Southampton have had, but they need to start applying some pressure themselves. Is it time for Bruce to consider making some subs?

CLOSE AGAIN!! Romeu has space on the edge of the box and shoots from range but Darlow in the Magpies' goal manages to get the slightes of fingertips to push it onto the bar.

OFF THE LINE!! Ward-Prowse fires in the corner, Vestergaard heads it on to set-up Bednarek and his effort is cleared off the line by Lascelles to deny Saints the opportunity to double their lead!

Lascelles takes a shot inside the box but Ward-Prowse does well to block it.
