Roberto De Zerbi was taken aback by Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu's decision to name Kaoru Mitoma in the Asian Cup squad, with the 26-year-old ruled out for up to six weeks with an ankle injury. Mitoma injured his ankle in the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on December 21. De Zerbi has had to contend with a series of injuries this season, that includes Solly March and Julio Enciso.

Roberto De Zerbi has admitted he was "really surprised" by Kaoru Mitoma’s inclusion in Japan’s Asian Cup squad, despite his ankle injury.
Mitoma was spotted leaving Selhurst Park on crutches following Brighton’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on December 21, and was subsequently ruled out for up to six weeks, leaving the winger a huge doubt for the tournament.
However, this has not stopped Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu from naming the 26-year-old in his squad.
"I'm really surprised because my medical staff told me Mitoma needs four, six weeks for his injury," said De Zerbi in his pre-match press conference.
"For me, it's difficult to think he can play in the Asian Cup.
"But I am a fan of Mitoma, of all my players, so if they can play for their national team I am very happy and very proud."
Japan play their first match of the tournament against Vietnam on January 14, with the competition running between January 12 and February 10.
Moriyasu hopes Mitoma will be fit enough to play some part in their campaign, but admits that the Vietnam match may come too soon.
"I don't know if [Mitoma] will be ready for the first match, but he is recovering well and I expect him to be available at an early stage," said Moriyasu.
De Zerbi is also set to be without Simon Adingra after his selection for Ivory Coast’s African Cup of Nations squad, despite a hamstring injury.
Brighton are back in Premier League action against West Ham on Tuesday looking to build on an impressive 4-2 win over Tottenham on December 28.
The Seagulls have been plagued by several injuries this season, with Solly March, Joel Veltman, Tariq Lamptey, Ansu Fati and Igor Julio all currently ruled out.
Meanwhile, skipper Lewis Dunk will miss the trip to east London after picking up his fifth booking of the season in that win over Spurs.
