Dominic Solanke will have “suitors looking at him” after a superb season for Bournemouth that has put “his name right in the hat” for England’s Euro 2024 squad, says Joe Cole.
The Cherries forward has been in sensational form in 2023-24, scoring 12 Premier League goals, a tally only bettered by Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland on 14 each.
Speaking ahead of Bournemouth’s clash with West Ham at the London Stadium on Thursday evening, TNT Sports expert Cole heaped praise on the 26-year-old.
And with Gareth Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland watching on from the stands, Cole said that Solanke could be in the mix for a Euro 2024 call-up, despite only having one cap to his name from a friendly against Brazil in 2017.
“I’m always pleased for any footballer fulfilling their potential. He’s one of them players who is a natural finisher,” Cole said.
“You’ve just got to find your level. At times you can maybe have a bit of self-doubt – ‘am I going to be a Championship player?’ - but he stuck at it. He’s a top drawer Premier League player now.
“No Englishman has scored as many goals as him. He’s becoming the player we all thought he could be. He’s a great lad, he’s leading the line, and there will be some suitors looking at him.
“You can’t disregard England as well. There is a tournament this summer and his name is right in the hat for that as well.”
Another man sure to be on Holland and Southgate’s radar on Thursday night is Kalvin Phillips, who was named in the West Ham starting side to make his debut after a January loan move from Manchester City.
England international Phillips was starved of regular game time at City, where he made just two Premier League starts in 18 months, and is hoping to revive his career in east London.
“He’s going to bring a lot of quality, he’s a great character,” Cole said of Phillips.
“I’m really pleased for the lad. He went to Man City and didn’t get the games he wanted to. But he can come here and be a real star.
“This club, losing Declan Rice has left a big hole. [Edson] Alvarez has come in and been outstanding, now you’ve got Kalvin Phillips as well. The club is in such a strong position, the recruitment has been spot on.”
TNT Sports expert Aaron McLean spoke to Phillips before the match and revealed the state of mind the former Leeds United player is in after his move.
“He’s just delighted to be here and to be able to play week in, week out,” McLean said.
“That’s what he’s needed. It hasn’t quite worked out for him at Man City yet, he hasn’t got the game time he would’ve wanted, he’s only started two games in the last 18 months in the Premier League.
“He’ll be disappointed with that, but this is a real opportunity for him to go out and show people what he’s about, almost reinvigorate himself and go into the summer where he will hopefully be in the Euros squad.”
