Kalvin Phillips: Ally McCoist says 'the best thing' would be for England midfielder to leave Manchester City

The future of Kalvin Phillips remains one of the biggest talking points in this January transfer window, with Ally McCoist and Rio Ferdinand discussing whether the Yorkshireman should leave the Etihad Stadium this month. The 28-year-old continues to be a peripheral figure in Pep Guardiola's plans, and Ferdinand admitted he would be "amazed" if Phillips is not pushing for a move behind the scenes.

Ally McCoist says it could be "the best thing for all parties" for Kalvin Phillips to leave Manchester City in this January transfer window in pursuit of regular game time.
McCoist, together with Rio Ferdinand, was speaking with Laura Woods about the England midfielder’s predicament ahead of City’s match against Newcastle at St James’ Park – a game live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
And they concurred that a deal could be in the best interests of everyone involved, especially with other players being played out of position at the expense of Phillips.
“It would be a good move for Newcastle and in my opinion, an even better move for Kalvin Phillips,” McCoist told TNT Sports.
“I don't think I can remember or ever see a coach or manager more or less tell a player they're not in their plans. He's been really polite about Kalvin Phillips, says he's a great lad, trains very well and ticks all the boxes apart from the major one, getting him out on the green baize.
"He clearly doesn't see him as an out-and-out starter for his team, so the best thing for all parties might be for him to move.”
Ferdinand believes the 28-year-old Phillips is likely pressing for a move away from the Etihad Stadium.
“As a player, I'd argue the first thing you want to do is play games,” he added.
“Everyone has got to be part of the squad, but if you're part of the squad, you're still getting minutes here or there.
“If there are injuries, you come in. Players are being shoehorned into positions where he would say: 'this is my natural position'.
“At this stage of his career, I'd be amazed if he's not knocking on the manager's door and saying: 'I had a great time here, you've enabled me to win trophies, but I've got to go and play some games now.'"
