Brentford versus Arsenal LIVE: Arteta’s team with chance to go top

An 89th minute goal by Kai Havertz at the Gtech Community Stadium secured a 1-0 win over Brentford and sent Arsenal to the summit of the Premier League.

After a slightly flat performance from Arsenal, Havertz entered the match as a late substitute and headed in a Bukayo Saka cross from close range.

There was pressure on Aaron Ramsdale, who was playing his first Premier League game for Arsenal since the start of September. With David Raya unable to play against his parent club Ramsdale survived a few nervy moments, and only a superb clearance of the line from Declan Rice prevented Yoane Wissa from scoring after Ramsdale gave the ball away close to goal.

Arsenal had the better of the chances during the game, and had a goal ruled out at the end of the first half after a VAR review found Leandro Trossard marginally offside when following up a saved header from Gabriel Jesus.

The Gunners leapfrogged Manchester City and Liverpool into first place, after the two drew 1-1 in the lunchtime kick-off.

We're a third of the way through the season, and this is the late sting that's put Arsenal on top.

All of the Arsenal players go straight to Ramsdale, who ends the match with the ball in his mits. That's a nice touch from them; their colleague was under it tonight, and survived a few shaky moments, but Arsenal have nicked it and go top of the table.

Pinnock hurls it in but it bounces through to Ramsdale. The full-time whistle soon follows, and we're done!

It's a long, late punt into the box for Brentford, and Ramsdale plucks it out of the sky. He's taken plenty from the home fans tonight, but looks like getting out of here with a clean sheet and three points.

What a late twist. Have Brentford got anything left? There's a minimum of four minutes to go, and Frank throws on three subs.

They've broke through all right! After an evening of inswingers from the left, here's one from the right; Saka whips a delicious ball to the back post, where Havertz steams in to head the ball down, through the legs of Flekken and into the net! That's a huge goal!

Pinnock this time rises to nod a Trossard cross away. Arsenal have all the territory and ball here, can they break through?

Arsenal are going for it now. They get a three on three, and Saka feeds Nketiah on the left of the area. Nketiah should feed it back to Saka but opts to shoot, and it's a daisy cutter straight at Flekken.

Another towering header by Mee clears the ball to the edge of the box. Saliba takes the shot on, which takes one bounce and flies a yard wide.

Trossard swings one in from the left now. Havertz rises, but Flekken is out to pluck it right off his fringe.

It's a booming hit from the edge after good work by Trossard, and it deflects a yard wide for a corner.

It's Havertz for Martinelli.

Great work from Mbeumo again, as he stands up a cross to the back post. Maupay thumps a header at goal, and Zinchenko does brilliantly to hook it off the line and away to prevent a certain goal.

Mbeumo floats a ball wide to Maupay. After a good tussle with Saliba, Arsenal clear.

Maupay and Baptiste replace Wissa and Yarmolyuk.

Under pressure from Nketiah, Flekken coolly plays the ball out from near his own line. From there Brentford spring forward and work a shooting chance for Yarmolyuk, who plugs his shot straight into the hands of Ramsdale from 25 yards out.

Martinelli whips in another dangerous inswinger. Nketiah is waiting to head it in but a scrambling defensive header from Mee puts it out for a corner at the last second.
