Aston Villa were held to a 0-0 draw at Goodison Park as Everton snapped a three-game losing streak in the Premier League.
Villa needed a win to move back into second place after Manchester City’s win over Newcastle United on Saturday, but failed to breakthrough Sean Dyche’s team as Unai Emery oversaw a 0-0 draw for the first time in his Premier League career.
Alex Moreno had a sublime strike disallowed by VAR – with Leon Bailey having strayed offside in the build-up – though for Villa’s possessional dominance, the best chance of the game fell Everton’s way when Dominic Calvert-Lewin raced through late in the first half, only to be denied by Emiliano Martinez, who subsequently kept out James Garner on the rebound.
Villa huffed and puffed in a scrappy second half, with substitutes Jhon Duran and Matty Cash going close, while Abdoulaye Doucoure had a goal disallowed for offside at the other end.
The draw leaves Villa in third place, level on points with City but behind the champions on goal difference, while Everton move a point clear of the relegation zone.

FULL TIME: EVERTON 0-0 ASTON VILLA

LAST CHANCE?
One last attack – perhaps – from Everton, but it comes to nothing as Onana slices a strike well over from the edge of the box. Before that, Garner had got in down the left, but his cutback did not get to Harrison.

END TO END
Another opening for Villa. Tielemans threads a neat ball into Watkins, who turns it out to Moreno. His excellent ball finds Duran, but he can’t direct his header on target.
Everton launch a counter-attack, with Harrison steering a ball into the box, with Beto the target, but Lenglet makes an excellent interception.

SEVEN MINUTES
A groan goes up from the Goodison crowd, as seven minutes of stoppage time is announced.

NO GOAL!
Everton think they’ve won it as Doucoure bursts through and hammers home beyond Martinez, but the flag is up!
There’ll be no need for VAR – Doucoure had indeed strayed a good yard offside before getting onto the ball. There's still plenty of life in this game!

SO, SO CLOSE
Cash has been superb since his introduction, and the right-back has just put in a delightful ball for Duran.
The striker manages to get a toe on it at the near post, but it flashes wide of the opposite bit of upright.

DESPERATE DEFENDING
What. A. Block. Brilliant from Mykolenko, who somehow manages to deny Villa with a fantastic block from point-blank range, after Cash had got on the end of Moreno’s cutback.
Onana and Pickford then get in each others’ way, allowing another shot to come in, but Coleman is on hand to keep it out and clear Everton’s lines.

TIME TICKING AWAY
Moreno finds space down the left flank, but this time there’s no quality to his cross, which sails out of play.
Duran then takes a little swipe at Mykolenko, which Branthwaite does not like, though Coote is across swiftly to stop it boiling over.
Five minutes left, plus stoppage.

SHOULD DO BETTER
Doucoure makes a great run in behind Villa’s defence, and he’s found by Onana’s searching ball.
Everton’s number 16 takes it on and looks set to drive into the area, but then checks back onto his weaker left foot. There’s an opportunity to shoot, but he hesitates, and by the time he does get his attempt off, Villa have recovered.

PINBALL
Moreno’s cross from the left causes havoc, with Branthwaite having to stretch to win the initial header and Duran then getting on the rebound. However, with Tarkowski applying some pressure, the Villa forward can’t generate any power on his header, and Pickford makes a comfortable stop.
It’s scrappy, but there’s plenty of time left for a moment of quality to settle this contest.

TIELEMANS BOOKED
Referee Coote has had enough of Tielemans, who lunged in on Garner and then also had a little flick out at Coleman. Everton win a free-kick down the right, and Tielemans goes into the book.
The crowd is up for the set-piece, but McNeil’s delivery is a poor one and Martinez collects it under no pressure.

VILLA CHANGE
Cash, who scored his first Villa goal against Everton back in 2021 – and was on the scoresheet last week against Middlesbrough – is on for Carlos, which will mean Konsa moves into the centre-back position.

SIMMER DOWN
Tarkowski was clearly being held by Carlos, though the referee did not blow for a foul. The Everton centre-back takes out his frustration on Moreno, with a full-blooded tackle – but one that certainly won the ball.
That angers the Villa players, in particular Lenglet, who rushes over to confront Tarkowski. As a result, both players will go into the book. All a bit needless.

THAT’S GOING TO HURT…
Onana needs a breather after he goes into tackle Tielemans from behind. As his compatriot attempts to shield the ball, Onana takes a blow to the crotch, and definitely has the wind taken out of him.
Sympathetic looks all around, but he’ll be fine to carry on.

OOOF!
Beto tried to hook a long ball across field, but only managed to strike it – at some power – straight into the face of Kamara. The Frenchman goes down and play is halted, though he is back to his feet quickly enough.

DID DANJUMA TAKE HIS CHANCE?
McNeil has made a quite miraculous recovery to come back from what looked like a serious ankle injury when he sustained it against Palace 10 days ago, and he is undoubtedly Everton’s first-choice left winger.
Danjuma might not have been able to stake his claim today, though it should be noted that it was he who played in Calvert-Lewin for the striker’s opportunity before half-time, so maybe he hasn’t done his chances of getting another start in the FA Cup replay against Palace on Wednesday any harm.

CHANGES
Two substitutions for Everton, as Danjuma and Calvert-Lewin – who missed that great chance earlier on – making way for McNeil and Beto respectively.
There’s also a double switch for Villa. Tielemans and Duran, who scored in Villa’s 4-0 win over Everton in August, are on for Diaby and Bailey.
