Liverpool and Manchester United shared the spoils at Anfield after a low quality match ended in a goalless draw.

It was the visitors that created the best chance of the match, with Rasmus Hojlund forcing a smart save from Alisson Becker in the second half. That was a rare foray forwards for United, who ceded most of the territory and possession to the hosts.

Liverpool had passive domination of a tepid first half, and won a succession of corners. Only one forced a save from Andre Onana, as he turned over a header from Virgil van Dijk. In the second half Trent Alexander-Arnold whistled a low drive past the post, with Liverpool mostly forced into shooting from distance. An injury time red card for Diogo Dalot arrived too late for Liverpool to make the numerical advantage count.

The draw is Manchester United’s first in the Premier League this season, and will take some pressure of Erik Ten Hag after poor recent performances.

The point moves Liverpool up to second place in the table, ahead of Aston Villa on goal difference and one point behind leaders Arsenal.

United hold out for the final few minutes, and one of the stranger games between these two has ended goalless.

Well now! Dalot dispossesses Salah, but doesn't get the throw in he thins he deserves. He rages at Oliver and gets one yellow, keeps his rant going and immediately gets another!

Rashford fires a low cross into the area and Liverpool do well to clear.

A wicked cross from Tsimikas bounces through the United area, and hits Shaw on the hand on its way. United eventually scramble it away and Jones, recently on as a sub, drags his shot wide of goal.

Liverpool work a shooting chance for Gakpo from distance, but Varance blocks it behind for a corner.

Pellistri replaces Mainoo and Hannibal comes on for Antony.

Antony gets clear down the right, and dances into the area. His low cross finds Rashford, but he's crowded out and Liverpool eventually force United away from goal.

Elliott, the matchwinner last week, enters the fray.

Salah finds Diaz with a clipped ball in behind Evans, and he's in. A superb recovery tackle from Evans pokes the ball away, and Nunez seems to busy appealing for a penalty to chase the loose ball and put it in. Drama!

It's getting tetchy at Anfield. Liverpool have controlled this but United have created the most clear chance so far.

Rashford replaces Garnacho for United.

United break again, with McTominay almost bursting through into the box. Liverpool then break immediately on them, with Salah forcing a showy save from Onana. Now it's picking up!

United break, and work the best chance of the game. Antony plays it infield to McTominay, who clips a lovely pass first time into Hojlund. He's one on one with Alisson, but shoots straight into his belly.
