Police are investigating after an object was reportedly thrown at Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson after his side’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Wednesday.
The 76-year-old said that Palace fans had become “spoilt” by success in recent seasons, as the final whistle at Selhurst Park was met with a chorus of boos.
Hodgson was not hit by the object and claimed to be unaware of the incident until informed of it after the match.
Palace have won just once in their last eight games and face a daunting task against title-chasing Liverpool, live on TNT Sports on Saturday, in their next match.
The Metropolitan Police said no arrests had been made and no injuries reported, but that enquiries are ongoing.
Hodgson is in his second spell in charge of The Eagles after coming out of retirement to oversee a charge away from the relegation zone last season.
Palace enjoy a nine-point cushion above the drop zone in 14th, but have won just once at home in the Premier League all season.
“I would sum it up as a very sad evening for us," said the former England manager. "The fact is that the expectations are high, hence the boos.
“The fact is the fans have been spoilt here in recent times. They’re used to seeing us do very well at home and get good results and this year we’ve not been able to do that.
“They’ve come here today, of course, thinking after our good point at West Ham that we would run all over and blow Bournemouth away, but unfortunately they are false expectations because Bournemouth are not an easy team to blow away.”
Liverpool could go top of the Premier League, for a few hours at least, should Jurgen Klopp’s men inflict more misery on Palace at Selhurst Park.
The Reds trail leaders Arsenal by two points after a 2-0 win at Sheffield United on Wednesday.
The Gunners are not in action until later on Saturday when they face the daunting task of trying to end Aston Villa’s 14-match winning run on home soil in the Premier League.
