Eljif Elmas’ late strike gave Walter Mazzarri a winning start to his second spell at Napoli as they beat Atalanta 2-1 in Serie A.

Mazzarri, who replaced Rudi Garcia in the Partenopei dugout earlier this month, thought the reigning champions had taken a 33rd-minute lead, only for Amir Rrahmani’s header to be disallowed for offside.

But Napoli did break the deadlock just before half-time when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia headed home Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s cross.

Atalanta responded well after the break and equalised in the 53rd minute as Ademola Lookman glanced in an inviting Hans Hateboer centre, before Mario Pasalic was denied by the offside flag as the hosts threatened to complete the turnaround.

However, Napoli snatched all three points 11 minutes from time as Marco Carnesecchi's poor clearance ricocheted to Victor Osimhen, who teed up Elmas to seal victory.
